I think most apples look like ass. I've been looking at a new computer myself and there's quite a few of those all in one PCs too.. they are just as ugly!

Anyways, to continue on with this thread. As I just stated I'm looking at getting a new PC myself (prompted by this thread!).. I want something that's totally Media Center ready.
There arn't many systems that come with a remote. I'm looking at this item:

http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/prod...fp-10160870-hewlettpackardhppavilionelitea-en

Anyone know of any other systems that are similar to this? It must have an IR receiver, ATSC tuner and digital sound out.

Thanks..

It's basically just a monitor with a large aluminum band on the bottom and a disk drive on the side..... but you have to like aluminum vs black plastic, I'll give you that.

Just adds up to more inflexibility.. This is not a knock against macs, the same is true for an all in one PC.. I would never buy one myself and I do like to make changes and upgrade things..

Very true, I think they've started configuring the iMacs with a monitor port so that you can use it as a monitor in the future if you want to upgrade to a newer computer....

I got my Dell i7 Nov 2009. A couple weeks ago it started doing the same. Cooling fans would kick into high speed with that annoying whirling sound. I opened it up to look inside and it was filthy as expected. That Dell is very easy to open for a look inside. Lot of dust caked around the fans and CPU. Carefully 'grounded' myself and vacuumed out the whole box. Even carefully disassembled the two fans to thoroughly clean out the CPU heat venting fins. CPU fan has an easy to disassemble 'snap-lock' assembly so you can clean it out better. The only fan that was difficult to get to clean, was the fan on the video card. I cleaned it the best I could without pulling it out of the box. After it was cleaned, it was put together and is running quiet again. There are 3 fans in that Dell i7, so they will suck a lot of dirt into the box.
nah, loud and annoying right out of the box. They implemeted the variable speed fan thing which I actually hate. Rather have a constant sound that you get used to than silence and then high speed. I googled it shortly after and it was a known problem with the "Studio" model at the time. I'm sure they've remedied it by now.

I don't really think $1,199 is triple $699 plus whatever she's going to pay for a monitor..... and think of not having to bother with virus software..... plug it in and it works - one cable (power) and you're done, bluetooth keyboard and mouse and a fantastic screen.... free photo software (iPhoto), free movie editing software (iMovie)....
That's IF there are no upgrades made to the cheapest model 2.5Ghz Mac! A few options/upgrades to that entry level Mac will take it up to $1,786.95!
The PC model looked at in post #14 is rated @ 2.93Ghz!

When you upgrade the Mac to that, plus a couple needed options/upgrades you easily run well over $2000 for the Mac!

AV is FREE for PCs. I haven't paid for AV yet in 14 years using PCs and now running Linux have no need for AV at all!

WOW! That sucks! I would have took it back. Mine is very quiet.

They were clearing out i3 27" iMac factory refurbs on the Apple Canada site for about $1200 last week. It is a sweet display probably worth $700+ on its own.
I'm on the prowl for a deal on a ~120gb SSD so I can have a separate SSD for each OS.

Doesn't need any upgrades - base model is plenty of computer given the desired uses....

M$ black plastic box is 700 + 150 for a monitor = 850 or 1,200 for a mac....

For the desired uses (vague as they are), the CPU's speed is hardly going to make a difference. I'd look to make sure that I was getting the most storage space available if they are intent on downloading videos.

Don't forget, if you get a Mac you get a free email and calendar client that will synch with multiple email accounts and calendars.... for free just like iPhoto and iMovie....

Then there is the free backup utility (Time Machine), just plug in a cheap USB harddrive and forget it, Mac OS will ask if you what to use that drive for TM, answer yes and you're done, incremental backups every hour in the background.... free.

Or you can get a black plastic box.

Did the OP indicate at any time a desire to learn a new OS and go way over budget in the process???....
