Computer dead

Appreciate any help in diagnosing a problem.

My main computer of which runs constantly for the last 5-6 years just shut down. This is a 2400XP in ATX case/PS. This is not a Windows shutdown, the power on computer.

I have verified that the computer will not turn back on and that it is plugged into a outlet that does work.

Question: What could it be? I'm guessing the power supply but could it be the MB or CPU? Thanks for any help.

With switching power supplies you really can't check them unless they are under load or the sense pin on the PS is grounded I think. My best guess would be to find a spare PSU or buy one and see if it works. The other thing could be it may have blown a fuse. Sometimes those can be replacable or if you have soldering technique you can put in a new one.

What happens when you try and turn it on?
- beep pattern
- power lights come on briefly, then go off
- absolutely nothing

Your descriptions sound like power supply. I've seen this happen more than once on machines about that vintage. You can get one pretty cheap. Last one I bought was under $20.

You can indeed get them pretty cheap, but if you want to be able to use it in any future build, I'd strongly recommend spending around $50 and getting a decent one.

Those $20 no-names are pieces of crap.

Thanks all for your help.

Turns out it was the PS. It was a 300W PS which was cooked because i'm running AGP video, massive CPU fan, 4 case fans, 2 HDD, DVD & CD, Audigy+ Live drive, flash drives, 5 USB, TV tuner & ethernet card.

Decided to avoid problems in future and go with a 500W.
