I need advice needed on buying a MFC compatible with OS 10.3.2 and XP.

This is for my SOHO, so I need a cost effective copier/ scanner to OCR docs/ fax/ printer/ etc.

I have narrowed it down to 3:

Samsung_SCX-4216F ~$500 cdn

and the HP 3030 ~$700 cdn. reviewed in macworld May 2004:

and the Brother mfc-8420 ~$700-800 cdn reviewed in macworld May 2004:

Thanks in advance for your help!

The SOHO only takes the Samsung_SEX-4216Fb.
Also you may want to look at the HP 90210, made in Beverly hills.
The brother mfc-8420 is a great choice but we all are worried what the mfc stands for.

Hope this helps.

I've used an HP 3320 before - sames as the 3330 minus the fax.

Pros:

Good print quality
Reasonably Quiet
Toner seems to last long enough and is easy to change
Generally an easy printer to use (printing envelopes, copying etc)
Energy Star compliant

Cons:

Fairly slow printer as far as laser goes
Copier is also slow - bulb takes a while (15 sec or so) to warm up
Low paper capacity
Copier only does 8.5x11; if you need to copy legal you're SOL but this is true of most MFC

Document Feeder

The 3030 has an automatic document feeder that would allow you to scan legal size documents.

I've never been a fan of Brother and less so of Samsung so i would buy the HP.

HP's typically have been a bit more pricey for a few less features (speed, resulution etc) - but I always go back to them because you plug them in, and they work - for a long time
