I've suggested and alternate route that takes him along a secluded part of Hwy 9 near Newtonville.

The 401 is currently closed east of Toronto, near Port Hope and everything is backed up to Oshawa. There are no alternative so you better stay home!

You can take Hwy 7. It will be a long slow ride. But you should get there in time for the Senators season opener.
