That's me.

Anyone ever had anything similiar happen.

For a number of years I was working some pretty high profile jobs - but at middle management level - did alot of special projects.

Well one day I was called into the bosses' office and was highly suggested to me that I take a less glamerous job "in the field" - but a lateral move. He let me I could stay but if I moved he would promote a young lady he was very close to.

Well I got a real sweet deal..... in fact ended up monetarily really benefitting as I was lateral but paid on an hourly clock now ie. paid overtime.

I gave them what they wanted and I must say I really reaped benefits as well.

And truth is I am much happier in the field rather than sitting behind a computer in an office all day.

I also realise that a well rounded life is far more important than a career.

Now I am happy as shit - I have always been a hands on person - but I have been accused of selling myself out.

I say I am farther ahead - they got what they want - I have a sweet deal and total independance. As a matter of fact, they are often scared to confront me.

Anyone offer any similiar stuff or words I can give to my well meaning friends at work to shut them up. I am not career oriented - I do a good job but not looking to climb the Corporate Ladder - anything wrong with that?

Or am I misguided?

In my chair
MH, for a guy in the field, you sure seem to find enough desk time to post.

MH, don't measure your success by other people's standards. If you're making a comfortable living AND your happy, you're ahead of 90% of the rest of us out there.

Offstage, instrument tuned.
I remember reading a book years ago...titled something like 'How to Live Without a Salary', the basic premise being that you could live on little or no salary simply by lowering your cost of living. In today's world, especially in the city, the pressure to have more/buy more is hard to fight.

Nic Frenchy, you need to remember that the reason to work is to provide yourself with a comfortable life that makes you happy. Work is not supposed to be your life....especially if it isn't any fun.

Been there --done that--- job satisfaction is a lot more important than stepping on people and clawing your way to the top... Good for you milehigh. To hell with all the naysayers --they are just jealous--- and you are laughing all the way to the bank.
Good luck.

Doing work you are comfortable with and enjoy is probable one of the most important things in life. Being able to purchase status items that you have little time to use/enjoy is poor compensation for spending 8 – 14 hours a day plus travel time on a job that you don’t like.

Youv'e got it right. Money or position doesn't necessarily make you happy.
