It happened after that dude killed a girl he met through CL. Strong backlash, so CL stopped running them so obviously.

Wrong.. it was shut down as they were under huge pressure in the US regarding profiting from prostitution and aiding in human trafficking.

Correct. Craigslist was/is a "straight" website, with most of its traffic coming from non-sexual content. They felt the pressure from the moral majority, did a risk assessment and decided to protect their straight business at the expense of the kinky stuff. Backpage is about backpage shenanigans, lol. Not as much to lose as CL.

Craigslist succumbed to pressure and backpage fought back. The exact same groups have applied just as much or more pressure to backpage and they refuse to stop placing these types of ads. Kudos 2 backpage.
