I was thinking of traveling and dancing and was thinking about Japan. Does anyone know what it is like there. My primary concern is safety. I don't want to be sold in white slavery  or forced to do anything other than dance. Can anyone tell me if it is safe there?

I was also looking at Guam, same concerns there. Both places say they will pay for a return flight...but im always cautious when it seems like it is TOO good. Any comments???

The men in the Japanese clubs go crazy for big breasted blondes. For some reason.

there was a CBC tv special a couple of years ago about Canadian girls heading off to Japan to dance, only to be conned into these private hostess clubs where guys would grope/mistreat/ and generally abuse the "dancers" Not a great scene
Surprised that they would do that to Canadian dancers. I know that there is a problem where Russian women are abused and taken advantage of but I'm surprised it would happend to the western women too.

In Japan, you would be consider an "outsider" and not respected. You would end up being owned or controlled by the Yakuza.
The are part of Japan and there is no part of private business sector that doesn't do business with them; because they have no choice. They are in every business and no one will stand up for you. Most of these talent agents are really pimps and when they take you passport; well you'll be in deep du du.

Be safe and stay home.

i know a dancer who went to japan to work and absolutely loved it. she made a ton of money too.

however, as mentioned above, japanese men lean towards big buxomed blondes and are very demanding with extras. remember, man is the dominant sex in their culture.

i can see girls falling into the hands of the yakuza in japan but it really isn't any different than a cute 18 year old dancer in toronto falling prey to a pimp.

kat, i think your better option is to work in vegas or florida.

What is with all the Japan bashing?!?!?! We give the world the best AV, the best sex toys, the best electronics, the best cars and contribute a large chunk to the world economy!

Just like any other country with an advanced and mature economy, the underworld will be present and Japan is no exception. As with male dominance, that's basically univeral isn't it? It's not exclusively Japanese or Asian. Why do white people think Japanese and other Asian cultures treat their women with no respect?

Yakuza controlling everything? You guys watch too much TV! Do you think that we still carry swords around chopping peoples heads off? Do you think that their are women in kimonos running around holding paper umbrellas?

Enough with the stereotypes!

I'm not trying to stereotype. I have just never been to any part of Asia, so naturally I would be a bit nervous. I want to see different parts of the world. I love to travel. I have already seen most of the USA, so I'm not very interested in visiting florida and such places. I was going to teach overseas but I thought I would be able to save ALOT more money dancing plus it would be shorter contracts then teaching.

If you go bring two passports. If they are the seedy type the first thing they will do is take your passport. Knowing the locations of Canadian authorities within Japan will help also. I think it's a bad idea but if you do decide to go be prepared to get out quick.

Hope this helps,

It's perfectly normal to be nervous about it and to be a bit ignorant (I don't mean this in a bad way) about the customs and cultures - how could you know if you have been there?

I'd do a lot of research. There is some truth to the stories posted here, but I too know several girls who have worked in Japan as strippers and have been very successful without anything harmful done to them that wouldn't have occurred here.

It has to do with conduct, awareness and intent. If you intend to go there to be a porofessional, which I think you do, then you'll do fine. Especially if you do some research and ask around and delve into the characters/backgrounds of the people giving you advice.

Then theres the matter of attitude and conduct, which I am sure you'll be OK as well. Read up on the cultures you are visiting, don't be afraid to ask questions, be polite but firm and definitely not rude. You should do fine. Don't go alone.

Passport

Were I'm from there's a way, you have to "loose" your first one and pay for a second. Kat, I don't know Japan except from reading up on the country. But I do know the USofA. White slavey exists in large cities such as NY and the common story with all of the women who fell pray was that they got their passports taken from them. They were also kept under watch at all times. The ones who do escape usually forgo their fear of local law enforcement and turn themselves in (basically rescuing themselves). These women that I mentioned are mostly from Eastern Euorpe and are nieve of their options.

Good Luck, If you plan things out right and investigate you should be OK

OMG !!!! I have an idea don't ask go over have some extra cash and let people know what you are doing buy an open return ticket if you are paranoid then put your extra cash and ticket in a Swiss 24 hour safety deposit repository ... i know the Swiss bank has one in Tokyo. Just like here shit happens to people that don't know any better. We have more Organized crime here then they do.
Bikers Mafia yakuza Triads ..... not including all politically motivated crime like operations going on here. Shit we had Enron....
Talk to someone that has been over or go over for a shirt trip on your own. Our talk some client into paying for your ticket ;) .
Imagine the CBC making a story up .... hmmmm Philip Glass ring a bell to anyone?

I lived in Japan for a little over 2 years. The town I lived in was the hometown of the Yamaguchi gumi, who were the most powerful Yakuza clan at that time (don't know about now). I also made friends with many foreign hostess' there; most were Filipina, but one was a Canadian girl from Regina. None had any real problems at their clubs. Most clubs did hold the girls passports, but only so that they wouldn't run away (the clubs do invest a lot in the girls: airline tickets, lodging, meals, etc.) Guys would get very drunk and gropey (don't they do that here too?), but the clubs generally discouraged extras. (You could always tell the ones who were putting out by all the expensive stuff they were buying.)

However, guys were able to "buy" dates with the girls by paying the club. Again, this wasn't for extras, just shopping and dinner, but to convince the guy to come back to the club with you and spend some more money there. Sometimes the guys did get a little aggressive though, but if a girl took the usual precautions (as I suppose you would on any blind date) it was managable.

I also saw that CBC documentary and, with the exception of one girl who became a Yakuza boss' misstress  none of the girls were too negative about the experience. One even ended up marrying one of the customers.

So, if you want to see a new part of the world, and make some fairly good cash while doing it, I say go ahead.

I go to Japan about 2-3 times a year. Been doing that for the past 5 years. Been to Japan several time before, on vacation with my parents as a teen and as a student travelling. Any more questions?

You guys should really understand what you read and not put words in my mouth before you post. But this is asking too much from TERBites. Yeah they don't sell cookies, neither do the Hell's Angels. So what? Your point?

Yes.

What CultMinus is suggesting is actually good advice from a risk management perspective, but he's a poor articulator.

When you 'loose' your Canadian passport, you have to report it to the Passport Office and/or authorties immediately. Canadian passports are hot commodities on the black market. When you report the loss, you will have to sign a hand written affidavit detailing your loss ie how was it lost and what did you do to find it. The Passport Office will do a quick investigation and you will need to reapply for a new passport - getting signatures from the garantors again, paying the fees, submitting paperwork, etc...

Note that falsely claiming a lost passport in Canada is bad thing - someone who's a lawyer can tell you if it's criminal or not. I suspect it is - I don't actually know.

Your new passport will have an afixed note in it clearly stating that it is a replacement passport for the old one - which they detail as well. This will be placed in the remarks section of the passport.

The idea of having two passports, I am merely speculating on Cult's thoughts here, is that when you go dance there, if the establishment demands your passport (remember I wouldn't fall for these demands up front - polite but firm), then give them the 'lost' one if it's your only way out of a bad situation. It'd be worthless anyway. Then get out of there.

Again, I doubt this would happen at all, but Cult appears to be American and they live in a constant fear of the rest of the world.

re: 2 passports

This is funny, one yes one no.

Per rama putri, yes but you'd be holding a fraudulent passport which would be
bad if caught. I lost a passport once: Canadian embassy issued replacement
as rama putri describes but had 6 month expiry. After this only customs aand
embassy officials actually get to hold my passport; I'll show when asked but
not out of my hands, except one mistake in southern Africa and $$$.

When overseas, for employers:
- provide only your passport number, not the passport;
- Provide a photocopy of your passport;
- passport handover request for any reason is extremely suspect, just don't do it.
