I have friends who go to Destin each winter. They like it BUT are not looking for what you are!! lol
lol, in what way is it overrated considering 75 million tourists visit each yer on average. In fact in 2011 Florida set an annual tourism record of 86 million! If it was so overrated why do more and more tourists flock there each year? Seems millions disagree with your view.
btw, Destin and the panhandle is slowly becoming the new Florida spot because it's so undiscovered by tourists, but that will change I'm sure. Some of the greatest beaches are there and more for families than looking for poon. If you want to indulge in the hobby, try Pensacola, about an hour away.

Biggest negative is weather is cooler in winters compared to Naples, Miami, and other southern locales. As we speak it's only 7 C and highs for this week is around 17 to 22 C.
Gorgeous fishing village. Their harbor wallk has great restaurants and night life. There is a big condo building there. Go up the steps to Starbucks, follow the second story balcony past Starbucks, past a very eclectic art gallery, over a tiny bridge, to a wonderful little Italian restaurant. I think it was called La Familia. Also across the street is one of the best Irish pubs I ever visited. There are like a million dollar bills stapled to the ceiling.
On the back side of Destin is another harbor with an incredible little community attached. The Broken Egg there has incredible breakfasts. I understand there is a huge water park on the main road.
If you go west over the bridge there is a wonderful aquarium and another party area around it. In Fort Walton Beach just past that, you will find an indoor flee market. Junk central. But there is a cluster all around of other stores. AMAZING items at low low prices in some of them.
The beach there goes on and on and on and is a beautiful white sand.
It was a fun place to tie up.

I have not visited Disneyland yet. I loved Disney World. In small quantities it is fun and makes you feel safe and secure. But yes there are kids everywhere. They seemed to be in a state of perpetual amazement.
We will certainly be bringing our son to all of the Disney properties. Why not? He will love it.
Went there for a beach wedding a few years ago, would go again. Destin to Panama City Beach corridor is growing, but you can still find nice towns and resorts without the crowds. I second the Broken Egg recommendation. There's a huge mall in PCB called Pier Park with lots of restaurants and bars, lot of drunk women when things get going. For housing you can check out Vacation Rentals By Owner (vrbo.com), a site where condo owners list properties you can rent. You can also find good deals at hotels.com, especially if you want one of the upscale resort hotels. Be warned you are usually looking at a Sunday through Saturday requirement for lodgings.
At the risk of being accused of stalking again I WILL NOT post any link to Google Streetview to La Famiglia, Harbor Boulevard, Destin, Florida. Nor point out that there is no slim waisted long legged brunette with an iPad in hand walking by the turqoise coloured restaurant.
And no walking down Google Street View Lane for anyone else either!!!
