A private members’ bill aimed at allowing Canadians to buy wine from another province without fear of fine or jail time was effectly delayed by the NDP. One of the chief culprits was BC NDP MP Kenny Stewart. The thing I find oddest about this is that the people hurt the most by delaying this are those involved in the BC wine industry - the very province the NDP hope to govern next time around. The whole thing sounds petty and makes very little sense to me.

Why isn't this small matter a couple of lines in his party's omnibus Budget Bill? It amends and repeals all sorts of other very serious and wide-ranging laws; one more wee one would be nothing. Our Harper Government has allotted only a few days of debate and study before closing off consideration and forcing the vote, which its whipped MPs will ensure they win. Piece of cake.

Surely Mr. Harper, who is so keen on cutting needless expenses and archaic, bureaucratic red-tape would have been happy to accede to the wishes of the democratic Conservative caucus? And they're all for it, we understand. Or he could have used the same closure /debate-limitation he's put on the Budget and had his members whip this minor matter through similarly. Whatever supposed the sins of the NDP, it is the sponsor's fellow members who had the power, both to control the debate and to get the bill passed. They let him down; the Opposition did not.

Besides Canadians have long ignored this law, as have their cops for the most part. Cute story, but the Bloated Budget Bill shenanigans are the real issue. Watch for Elizabeth May's Many Amendment Ploy.

It was a private members bill supported by the Liberals as well try reading the article before chirping your usual nonsense. The question is why do the Dippers think this was a clever thing to do? Can you explain that?
