Keep this in mind next time you want to touch your phone, even when stopped at a red light. I just wish cops would focus their attention on driver's using cell phones while actually driving, not the ones using phones while stopped. Yes, it can be an inconvenience if you're behind someone at a light and they don't move when the light goes green. If it happens to me, I have a horn which I find is effective in getting their attention. It's not dangerous, it's not the end of the world and it rarely happens.

Considering many cars now come with large touchscreens, which you use to control all sorts of things, temperature, fan speed, heated seats, radio etc. all of which you can legally adjust at a stop light, but touch your phone to read a text and you can get huge fine. Question: While stopped at a red light, what's the difference between reading a text and shaving, sipping a coffee, putting on makeup, turning your head to talk to your kid in the back seat etc? Answer: Nothing, except you won't get a ticket for doing anything other than touching your phone.

So where did you get your ticket? Maybe share that so that we can avoid making the same mistake.

Remember that Apple Engineer Walter Huang that crashed his car while using autopilot and playing video games? You'd think these are smart people.

I usually just keep the phone in my coat's pocket, so that I can take photos if in a car accident.

What's so goddamn important except when SP cancels her session?

Years ago, a cop stoped me because he could see the flip down screen on my dash cam. Luckily, nothing came of it. I agree with you though that there are many things that can cause distraction that don't involve phones. Eating and drinking, fiddling with mirrors, entertainment system, seats, HVAC. Even getting into a lively discussion with someone in the car or on the phone. Rubbernecking causes it too.

Maybe because it’s easier for them to prove since our phone has a light and it has time and location stamps and usage information so they could more easily win and it’s an opportunity for them to find other things to fine you with while stopped.
I think parents who do anything distracted should be fined with endangering their child. I see women doing a phone call and lipgloss and texting no hands while looking in rear mirror.
i think men who have seats so far back and low and loud music should also be fined. Can they hear anything ? See anything ?
smokers should be killed off in general already. Disturbance of peace all around.
The people who are driving and eating a burger. Fine em.
the ones who don’t signal. Fine em !
the ones who stop on a yellow. Fine em !
well just our luck insurance companies are now requiring you to put their app on your phone. It monitors it all includimg your speed. Your insurance will go up accordingly. They claim it can go down but we know thats doubtful but that’s how they get you to download the app For that initial ten percent off. But locked in for selling your information.
Kids should be taught early to not be distracting and it will turn into adults who think the same. My grandfather would elbow you very hard in the ribcage if you were “annnoying“ him. No music played while driving. Or smack with the newspaper if there was one in the middle seat ( old car). Animals should not be in laps. Yes we love them but it’s a safety risk to them you and others.

I know, my brain is slightly warped but I must ask ...

Is this distracted driving ? Eyes on the road, no cell phone in sight ...
My friend from high school in high school got in a major off road accident from this. In all fairness it was his first or second bj and he just got his license. I think he was shorter too and so maybe her head hit the wheel since his legs weren’t long enough to give enough space. She’s lucky she didn’t die

I believe that you can a ticket for those.
Not according to this: https://www.ontario.ca/page/distrac... as eating, with careless or dangerous driving.

"Other actions such as eating, drinking, grooming, smoking, reading and reaching for objects are not part of Ontario’s distracted driving law. However, you can still be charged with careless or dangerous driving."

By the letter of the law, you can't have any open alchol in a vehicle even if it's only the passengers. That applies to limos and party buses too, but I'm sure it goes on. If you're speeding, careless or dangerous while doing anything it will attract the cops attention.

The world according to Garp comes to mind...but he was parked in the driveway...so I guess it doesn't count?

Driving instructors scamming the system. Not providing instructions. Just selling the certificates that the course has been completed. I know of at least 2 people (both relatives) who could qualify for the Canada's Worst Driver show.
It baffles me how they got their license. Both eventually came to their senses and stopped driving. Seems like anyone who wants a license can can get one. So add distractions to incompetence and you have disasters waiting to happen.

I didn't. In fact, other than a parking ticket, I haven't received a ticket for anything in over 20 years. I was simply pointing out how ridiculous it is to issue such a harsh ticket to someone when they're not even moving. Reading a text is no different and certainly no more dangerous than searching for a new radio station. I see lots of people every day in the city and on the highway texting while driving. Now that's dangerous, but it's easier for cops to catch you at a red light. That screams of a tax grab.
