I never said it cost money to call a lawyer for the first time! Costs every time after that though!It costs nothing to call a lawyer and ask how much they will charge for a meeting and what their fees are.
Any decent lawyer would have no problem giving an estimate of the legal fees for a matter before they are retained and putting the amount in writing as part of a written retainer agreement.
Many lawyers will offer block fees for work so that there are no hourly fees and you know exactly what you are going to pay upfront.
An "estimate" from a lawyer is nothing in stone. You'll have better luck getting a true $ amount from a shady auto mechanic!
Of the 17 family lawyers I called in my area, I never got offered a block. It was required of me to pay a retainer fee of $2500 minimum for separation proceedings up to $7500 retainer (most expensive I got a quote from) for court proceedings! Plus the costs of the forms which I listed above.
