It costs nothing to call a lawyer and ask how much they will charge for a meeting and what their fees are.

Any decent lawyer would have no problem giving an estimate of the legal fees for a matter before they are retained and putting the amount in writing as part of a written retainer agreement.
Many lawyers will offer block fees for work so that there are no hourly fees and you know exactly what you are going to pay upfront.

An "estimate" from a lawyer is nothing in stone. You'll have better luck getting a true $ amount from a shady auto mechanic!
Of the 17 family lawyers I called in my area, I never got offered a block. It was required of me to pay a retainer fee of $2500 minimum for separation proceedings up to $7500 retainer (most expensive I got a quote from) for court proceedings! Plus the costs of the forms which I listed above.

As a younger guy that's not married, I find this thread enlightening. I don't plan on getting married but if I move in with someone I'm definitely getting a prenup.

The estimate they give you "in writing" is just that, an estimate. The 'Retainer' is a $ value the law office requires of an client to prove to the law office that the client is committed to the case and wont back out. The cost to the client can and often does exceed the amount of the original retainer.
You are sending misleading and totally wrong information that the retainer amount is the quoted amount and that is all the client will need to pay for the case to be complete and that is a LIE!!

You are precisely the type of person I refuse to take as a client.
No matter how much money, dealing with you would not be worth it.

Problem clients are never worth the money and I have no doubt you would be one.

Perhaps some of these lawyers quoted you high fees just to get rid of you. It is a common technique.

For myself I would tell you straight out, "I don't want your business, call someone else."

So you're telling me the 3 lawyers I sat down with, 1 Ontario Court appointed free counsel and 2 paid counsel all lied to me?
The 2 paid lawyers I visited were both very egar to take on my case but you say that everything they told me was a lie?

If you are indeed a family lawyer and are either
A. indicating that the legal advise I paid for was incorrect misleading or wrong!
B. Or you are giving inaccurate misleading counsel and your firm needs to be made aware!
c. The government appointed lawyer was also misleading but gave the exact same information to me

For example: if your employer lays you off and asks you to sign a severance waiver of future claims in exchange for your severance package, there will be a clause therein stating that you acknowledge that you have had the time to discuss the waiver with a competent legal source and you fully understand and consent willingly to what you're signing off on.

I don't doubt the quotes you got.

A block estimate probably might scare most people because a lawyer has to charge based on estimated time and contingencies (hey, I know a criminal lawyer that will charge $7,000 for a DUI. He did one for an employee for $5,000. I'm sure he made good money. No time docket to justify a minimal number of hours for what was probably a run-of-the-mill case. I bet if he charged an hourly rate, it would've been less).

My ex signed a release to effect the divorce settlement. No right-minded lawyer will allow you to settle without the opposing side signing a full and final release.

However, maybe after Joe has coitus, he can answer if a lower-income earning spouse is entitled to a standard of living boost to her income, even though her own pre-separation income is sufficient for herself to comfortably live on after the divorce.

Our Legal adviser Joe has clearly said that the legal advice I paid almost $1,000 for plus the hours searching scheduling waiting in the courthouse for free legal advice were ALL liars!
I typed the fees of the available services that all these legal agents explained to me in my post and Joe informs us they all lied to me!

Wouldn't you be a little angry to find out that $1,000 bought lies and the only guy that knows the truth wont type any corrections to my post or take me as a client!
He'll only inform me that everything I paid $1,000 for was lies, wont correct the errors, just jumps in his 911 and rents a 2hr hotty
