Do you trust foreign doctors?

trm, where does one find postgraduate training information?

On the http://www.cpso.on.ca site it says "Postgraduate training information is not available." for my specialist.

I should state that the doctor at the walk-in clinic who referred me to the specialist was a brown guy. I was perfectly comfortable with him. I assumed he was Canadian born (or if not, raised here from very early age). He was a young guy - only 26 years old.

But I don't think it's wrong to question or investigate the credentials of doctors from overseas for peace of mind. Like others have mentioned, there are cases where our own doctors are not up to snuff.

Really? You trust a 26 yr old over someone who's been in the field for 40 years and managed to get through Canadian certification? Talk about laughable.

To relate my own experience, I had a specialist, Canadian born, US trained, worked in the US but left for some reason to set up a small practice whose floor I was afraid to step on in my bare feet.

I agree with thunderballs. I think my doctor is Tamil and the advice I get from him is terrible. I get more information from telehealth. LIke some of his advice could have sent my friend into anaphylactic shock. He couldn't diagnose eczema in a child and advised me to continue doing the wrong thing making it worse. He tested me for things I was already aware of... he was a no show to an appointment with me, didn't keep records that detailed past visits... There are other things I won't mention... but it really makes it hard to trust his word...

But as far as location, I have met an amazing doctor in the past running a practice out of a walking basement in Toronto. He was an older man, with a lot of information to offer and a great personality. the place was a little shady looking.... it was run down looking on the inside but in a nice area. but when I actually got to meet him I was impressed by how much information he wanted to know and the information he was willing to give to really try and help you understand things. I really wish I could find something like that out here where I live now. I'm not racist but I would give anything to have a white... French or English Speaking doctor.

Chantelle, your Tamil doc's value proposition to the society is clear. What's yours? I'm not a racist but there is too much white trash in Oshawa who do not work and live off government handouts. The dream job of these folks is getting approved for disability insurance and then they are set for life.

The tax paid by that hardworking doc pays for your handout cheque every 2 weeks.

While I too would prefer a Canadian born and educated doctor I now know not to make general assumptions based on race. Both my mother and father received life threatening service and advice from a doctor with the surname "Ross".

I only run into problems when some doctors bring their cultural viewpoints into the job.

Yeah definitely some biased stuff going on here.

I prefer to see a doctor who is thorough, experienced and takes the time to explain/answer my questions.

One of the better docs I had drew a flow chart of what my problem could be and what the courswe of action was going to be. That was awesome.

Another treated my symptoms like it was a curiousity and they were genuinly intrigued/interested in solving the problem.

Both were white but had really weird last names tht I couldn't place the nationality if I had to guess.

Young drs are great for referals and perscriptions but if I need a procedure done I want someone who has seen and done it all.

But I have had an instance where the older drs methods were dated and I got a second opinion from a younger more progressive dr (after things didn't work with the first dr)

A loophole is you pay the right people off, and you either get backdoor door while propping your resume here, or you get answer sheets for the exams.


It's your call to believe me or not, I could write an essay about what I know personally, but if you're convinced everything is on the up and up, then you'll continue thinking that. The system as I know it is corrupt. Personally I would only trust a European doctor but that's my prerogative.

Well, considering my GP was trained in Egypt, as was his wife, who is the Pharmacologist for his group of doctors foreign trained in Thailand, Germany or Poland, and spreads his time between two Cities and teaches at a university, they must be those exception you hinted at. You of course know of these payments and can tell us who's getting these pay off. I think you watch too much 20/20. My GP is more knowledgeable than the last two GP's I've recently had before him.
