Does that happen?

Many fast food joints have a cup on the counter that says "tips"

I see it and I think what a joke it is. What service is there in putting a couple burgers and fries or sub on a tray or in a bag?

I have seen these cups at Subway, KFC and A&W

Always tip, more % tips are given when I do high lights stuff. I usually go to one hair dresser if I like the cut or the overall skill. As a regular, the tip makes me more appreciated and in turn, better services are expected toward my next visit.

I always tip my hair-guy well, and I always get preferrential treatment there (less waiting times, more care). What I don't understand is whether or not you are supposed to tip the person that washes your hair... I know a lot of people do that, but even to a guy like me that tips a lot for everything, that seems wierd...

thoughts?

I thought $42 was already a lot of $$ for a guy's haircut...
You didn't stay for the extras;) The massage...

It's service industry my friend. My buddies with few coins buy their stylist coffee or bring them pastery. Some places like Sutherland & Chan with discreet enevlopes for tipping.

I tip at restaurants because with the minimum wage they get, tips are their source of potential income. I can actually feel their feedback and appreciation right away, if tipped well. On the other hand, if you have to tip hair dresser, why not tip accountant, lawyer or anyone who works in the service industry?

m ost stylists work for low wages,or they are on some sort of commission, their tips are a huge part of their income. If they do not add their tips in when figuring taxes, rev can or whatever they call themselves today, automatically add 25 percent to their wage.

this thread reminds me of a joke an American friend told me,
what is the difference between a Canadian and a canoe,
the canoe has a chance of tipping.

Aveda = Gay. Or possibly metrosexual, but of course we all know metrosexual = gay. Even the trendiest, coolest, most successful and self-confident guy should go to a barber shop. That's just the way the world is!!!! Tip $1 - $2.
Exactly.

I used to pay $30+ years ago. The I realized that the system used by the chains (e.g. First Choice) is the same as used by any school training hair stylists. Find a FC in your area, try the different ladies, and when you find one you like always ask for her. THAT used to cost an extra $1 but not anymore.

And tipping? $12 for cut & I round it to $15.

The proper ettiquette is that you NEVER tip the owner of anything so if the owner cuts your hair say "thank you"

Some of you are willing to pay as much as $200+ to see an sp, but wouldn't shell out 40 bucks to dress up yourself?

i agree with what others said. NO1 should ask for tips, in any business.

Lots of bartenders/serverse etc , can get really pissed if somone dont tip or they dont think its enough. But tipping is not a rule, it is optional. This is told to them the first day of bartending school. And you definitely dont ask for tips. I 've always thougth that was rude.

I would think that would be the same for any other service as well. Unless theres is a service where tipping is required as a rule/law i gues.

And ya i also see little tips cups or whatever in little shops/stores etc. Dont see the need, esp when you use a styrofoam cup with word tips on front. just looks ghetto.

I would never put any tip in the styrofoam cup, that's BS...like they are begging for money. I would rather put money into the cups of those needy people on the street.

Try the hairschool for a hair cut if you go so often they should do it for 10 or so. I hear sometime it's free because no one else go.
I did this a couple of times, but I knew the person who was at the school. Still should tip here, can't remember the cost but wasn't that much. But keep in mind, use at your own discretion.

A side note, I do tip here as well, but not for Idle's reasons. They apprently don't make much, and are there to learn, so give them a break. I think $2 is appropriate.

To answer you first original post, I would find a cheaper place. If you are paying $42, you're probably in a more upscale neighbourhood where $10 tip is more appropriate. Accept it or move on.:(

Keep telling yourself this if it makes you feel good.

I take great offence to the use of the term hairdresser to describe the person who gives a man a haircut. Go to a freaking barber. Not Supercuts but a real barber, a crusty old guy with a striped pole outside his shop and 3 days worth of un-swept hair on the floor. That is the only person who should cut a guy's hair. He should charge between $7 and $12, although if it's $12 you have the right to feel a bit overcharged. Aveda = Gay. Or possibly metrosexual, but of course we all know metrosexual = gay. Even the trendiest, coolest, most successful and self-confident guy should go to a barber shop. That's just the way the world is!!!! Tip $1 - $2.

Pay what you can afford and whats "worth it" to you.

A $15 hair cut is just that. You go in... get your hair cut and leave. If thats all you want then thats a great value.

A $45 hair cut is a great cut as well as a great experience. You get a great cut but you also get an hour or so which should be an enjoyable, relaxing experience. If you just want a cut and its not worth $45 to you, then go the $10 barber.

Its the same way that some people love a $1.50 Tim Hortons coffee and others will splurge for a $5.00 Starbucks.

If your a student, Id say you might be able to spend your money better else where than on haircuts.

NOTE: most salons offer free neck trims in between hair cuts. This usually gets you a couple of extra weeks between cuts and brings down the average cost of a cut if you factor this is in. Trimming the sides and back gets you more mileage... so to say.
