One additional data point:
Guy at work was always living hand to mouth, had trouble paying rent, always asking for loans around the office to make to it to pay day.
He was pretty miserable all the time, drowning his misery in alcohol and drugs (the drug habit only made his money problems worse), would always be late to work or would call in sick at least once a week. He would frequently lash out at others when things at work didn't go his way, generally not much fun to be around.
Deep down he wasn't such a bad guy, but the financial stuff really made his outlook on life pretty awful.
Fast forward a bit and he comes into a 7 figure inheritance. Gets a new place in a nice part of town, finally has a car. Miracle of miracles, he starts coming in on time, hardly takes sick days any more and is generally cheerful now that he has no money worries.
So for him, no money = sad, lots of money = happy.
Maybe he's buying better drugs.
