Does my CD or CD player skip??

I have a single-disc Sony Cd-player that I bought about 12 years ago. I moved recently and prior to that I had only one Cd, that I purchased used, skip. There was only one spot on that CD where this occurred and all my other CDs (12) played fine. I moved a few weeks ago and since that time I purchased one used CD and one brand new CD; which contains two discs. The used skips in one or two spots and both new CDs skip in a number of places. I tried the new CDs in my computer and in a new mini-system I just bought. They play fine.

Question:

1) Could the problem still be the discs, and my old player is just more sensitive to disc inconsistensies or is unable to correct problems like the newer systems?

I ask because I will try to sell the player tomorrow by taking it to a shop who will test it and offer me a price if all is well. They seemed honest on the phone, but I am not sure if I should tell them before hand just in case they try to low-ball with the information. If they find out it is good, I want to be prepared for any comments they have after I tell them about the problem. I would like to sell the player, but in the process have no interest in short-changing myself or others.

Thanks

after 12 years, I think you got your money's worth out of your CD player... buy a new one.

If the CDs skip in the same place consistently it's the disk. Otherwise it's the player. Get an MP3 player and download your music while you still can.

It's not uncommon for regular, consumer-grade CD players to start skipping after they've been used for a while. Given that CD players can be had for less than $100, your best bet is to just buy a new one.

I had a Sony ES player that started skipping, so even the higher end units will display this issue. I've since moved to a much higher end unit and haven't had any troubles. For most people though you're better off buying a new one.

I think he is planning on buying a new one already.
I f you read his post properly, you will see he is worried about it being accepted for re-sale from a shop.

I think they will not take it. They will probably test a few things on it and see that it skips. Good for you if they don't notice.

Just out of curiosity, How much are they Offering for it?

I'm not that up to date on CD players, but it used to be that most of the lower end CD players used the same transport. I think at the time it was philips. You can literally play a CD with visible scratches on my current CD player and it doesn't phase it.

I'd recommend buying something like a rotel or adcom if you are going to buy a new one. They most likely have good tracking and / or error correction.

You're not going to get more than 10 or 20 bucks for a 12 year old cd player, regardless of its original price tag or assumed value.

The Cd player might just need the head cleaned. You can buy a Cd cleaner disk for $10 or so, but you are probably better off to spend the money on a new Cd/dvd player as suggested.

Yes, I have already bought a new mini-system; receiver and CD player combined, w/ speakers.

With the information here, I think I will have them test it and if it passes, then I will tell them and they can decide what to do. I have other components I need to sell, so it will allow me to test their services.

They have offered 15 to 20 bucks for the old player if it passes.

That is what I was wondering Pool. If there was not some type of correction mechanisms in the newer players. This system cost $150 US when I bought it and I think that was a middle-of-the-road system at the time.

In the laboratory.
Years ago I had a Yamaha cd player which caused me grief. It would skip on certain cd's. Took it for repairs a couple times and still no relief from the problem. I finally bought another cd player and took out my anger on the Yamaha. Went at it with a hammer and my boots. Very, very satisfying!!

That's even more of what I was looking for.

If they feel it just needs a cleaning, at least it delays its trip to the scrap heap.

I had a similar problem with a Technics CD player.

While the electronics are quite sophisticated, the tracking system is basicaly a worm gear, driven by a servo.

I found that dirt had built up in lithium grease, and was able to clean it.

However, the added physical resistance damaged the servo. A very low power motor.

For interest's sake, the servo mechanism cost more than a new player.

Throw away soceity , I guess.

So much useful knowledge here. Does anyone know what I can get for resale of my 1977 Candle Brand 8-Track Player? Still in good working condition. Maybe some kind of antique value? It also has an Am/Fm receiver and ample inlets for additional components.

They gave me five bucks.

Said the laser is getting tired and can easily skip if the unit is tapped. The age of the laser also makes it more susceptible to picking up CD 'flaws' that newer players would ignore. The shop seems honest, so maybe I will take the other components (receiver, tape deck, and speakers) to them. Or maybe I will still try to sell one or two of them on eBay.

thanks again.
