Does the Canadian flag mean something different to you since the convoy?

Whenever I see a car with a Canadian flag, especially a larger flag, my instinct now is to wonder if the driver is simply patriotic or is anti-vax/mandate type.

Just yesterday I saw a pick up truck with a huge flag and of course he also had a F*** Trudeau sticker on his back window.

It just seems like the flag has become a political symbol since the convoy rather than the common, united symbol it used to be.

Is it just me?

Not going to lie. I had barely any faith in our govt pre pandemic. Now I have zero faith.

Damn shame too, I grew up proudly patriotic. Now all I see is governmental largess for vanity projects at the teat of the tax payer.

Agreed.

I will add that it's hard not to notice that these fucking losers all drive pickups, are unshaven and dress the same: tatty ball caps, 1980s-style convenience store sunglasses, and usually some article of clothing with a camouflage pattern, such as jacket, cap or shorts.

Low-class all the way.

Call me old fashioned, but I see the flag and I remember Boy Scouts and our community service projects.
Furling the flag and carefully storing it at the end of a scout meeting I also treasure the memory of.

I see the flag as a symbol of what we can do, political differences aside, when we pull together as a country.
Which, like I said up front, is a pretty old fashioned way of viewing the county we call Canada.

I've been thinking this exact thought. Whenever I see a Canadian flag on a car or pickup I think they're some crazy right wing anti vaxer or extreme Liberal hater. I like Doug Ford and Jean Charet and I also like some liberal politicians. I think we're lucky in Canada that for the most part out politicians do a fare and honest job considering they all come from different political perspectives. But the current flag wavers are right wing lunatics. I am also against religion and nationalism. And waving a flag of any country just looks to me like you're a fanatic.

Recently returned from Alberta from visiting a childhood friend not in good health. These guys are alive and well with the flag draped pickups FREEDOM plastered all over the trucks and a LOT of similar signs on lawns. On the other hand I proudly served in the Military in the 70's.I fly the flag at my home,Myrtle Beach condo and trailer.. I was never a fan of politicians except maybe my local Council but I am very proud of my country warts and all. I see the pick up guys with the flags etc around the GTHA and just shake my head. Now I understand thse bozos might be heading to Ottawa on Canada Day!!!!

So true. Anyone who gets emotionally invested in a flag has some pretty messed up issues.
Let me assure you that some of us who are emotionally invested in the Canadian flag do not have "pretty messed up issues."

I am a black man from a poor country where people survive on $2 a day. Canada welcomed me and gave me a great education - PhD Chemical Engineering from McGill. I have not suffered any overt racism or discrimination in employment, housing or social interaction. I was caught doing 82km/hr in a 60 km/hr zone the other day. The cop came back and let me off with a warning because the last time I received a ticket was 21 years ago - in New York state lol

Canada has made it possible for me to assist many members of the family I left behind in the old country. You should see the many messages of gratitude I have received on this Father's Day.

To me , the Canadian flag is a symbol of tolerance and opportunity. Which is why I am emotionally invested in it.

Good luck to you for your pretty messed up attitude.

Central Ont. between here & there
I am a proud Canadian, I've been flying a Canadian flag at my various homes for years. I wore red on Fridays long before it became popular during the afghan War & still do. Had a friend killed over there too. I go to various Rememberance Day or Memorial services every year to pay respect to those who offered the ultimate sacrifice for my freedom.
What happened in Ottawa was a disgrace & embarrassment from many various angles. Seeing a vehicle with a flag on it used to put a smile on my face. Now its.... hhhmm whats their message. Seeing larger flags & other slogans about leaders is embarrassing.
Canada is not perfect, nor do I trust many politicians, but it's a privilege to live here & I'm proud to be Canadian. We have a few other warts to deal with from our past that need attention, just like the wart of the Freedom Convoy will/is become a part of our history. Let's learn from it on how to do better
The good, the bad, the ugly that makes us who we are, I'm still proud to be Canadian & wouldn't want to live anywhere else.
Don't let the actions of a few wreck your day or your view of our great country

Cheers for sharing your story. But I can't help but noticing that what you really love about Canada is the people. People and the system we have here have made your life great in Canada -- and my life, too.

A flag had nothing to do with that.
