I would really like to get myself a small dog.. however I live alone and work during the day, so I'd have to leave it alone for hours at a time.

I've always thought that that's unfair on the dog, but I've been told that there are some breeds that are OK with that (like a cat).. Does anyone have any opinions on this?

Thanks..

BTW, I live in a medium sized condo.

A cat and dog are two different species, not breeds :)

How long are your days? Are you willing to get a companion for that dog or at least have a dog walker?

I have two large breed dogs and I live alone. I spend my days mostly at home and when I need to be on the road working I hire a neighbourhood girl to come over and look after them or I put them in a local kennel.

Are you getting a puppy or adopting a dog? You may want to consider getting a dog from a local rescue, such as http://www.4leggedlove.com/

Puppies require a lot of walks and attention, older dogs on the other hand have more blatter and bowel control. Granted they still need at least 2 walks a day. I walk both of my dogs 4 times a day. One is 6 months old and the other is 9yrs old.

fuck that,if you are going to get a stuffed animal you might as well get a stuffed chick http://www.realdoll.com/

But honestly if you have to ask if you should get a dog you shouldn't (no offense meant, just my opinion, like having a kid)

Thanks for the opinions.. I cannot disagree with you..
I was thinking about perhaps adopting a pet.. and I'm prepared to get up early to give a good walk before work, but I am definitely very concerned about how well a dog can handle being alone for 9 or 10 hours.

Leaving a dog alone for 10 hours isn't exactly ideal. Are you willing to hire a dog walker?

from my experience and knowledge they cant do it very well at all . Its not the best situation by any means. If I were you I wouldn't get involved in that. Its attractive short term but the well being of any animal is a long term "investment" Good on you for seeking info btw. again this is just my opinion. Not to be taken as gospel of course

That means more than a 5 minute leisurely walk around the block to empty the dog of waste.
I hope you have your baggie with you....:D

Just playing the devils advocate here but wouldn't you think that if he's willing to adopt a adult dog, that would be better than leaving the poor thing in a shelter that may put the dog down? I mean sure he'll be in a medium size condo for 8-10hours but it's at least better than a cage. I don't know, it's a tough one because i do agree with what everyone else said but then again some love is better than no love. Just my humble 2 cents :)

Yes, two dogs is much better, they will not be so concerned about when you are home, because they can play all the time. As long as they are compatible with each other. Ideally, get a dog door so they can go in and out as they require. With a condo, you can't, but you can train a small dog to use a litter box. If you have two, and they have a litter box, they should be fine to leave all day.

There was a time when I wasn't working for a while so I thought it would be good for my dog. Guess what? Even when I was home, all he did was sleep all day! That was an eye opener and I realised I had absolutely nothing to feel guilty about leaving him alone all day.

However, if you have an extremely busy lifestyle, meaning you won't be home in the evenings or weekends either...then yes, I would say it's going to be a pretty lonely life for the dog. Plus, if you're never home, why do you need a dog then? Having a dog is like having a kid. Neglect is neglect.

Why don't you consider getting something like a gecko or a parakeet?

Dogs are pack animals and need company. One solution might be to get two dogs but make sure they won't compete for alpha male status (ex: 2 male jack russells equals huge no-no, they'll kill each other).

I wonder if he's wanting a dog for the chick factor? You know, nothing attracts women like a kid or a dog (although a dog is easier in the long run lol).

Smaller breeds like shih tzus Llhasa Apsos and little toy breeds can be paper trained and do well in condos. But like Rub said, you need to give them plenty of attention before and after work. A dog takes a LOT more dedication than other pets.

I have to ask: why are you thinking of getting a pet? The reasons behind it can help determine what you get. As suggested there are lots of other types of animals out there that make great pets. I mean, a corn snake is very docile, doesn't bark, doesn't have accidents, doesn't shred your furniture, and only needs a mouse once a week - once every 4 days.

As stated, you're looking at a 10 - 15 yr commitment so don't enter into it lightly.

Whatever you do, do NOT get a jack russell terrorist. Not in a condo. It will drive you nuts and are too high strung. They need constant attention and a back yard to hunt in.
