I got stopped yesterday and ticketed for driving with an expired driver's license and expired plates. I could have sworn that I had renewed everything but I guess I spaced it.

The cop said that if I got everything up to date withing 24 hours then I could go to court, show the documentation and probably get the fine dismissed.

For $435 ($110 for invalid plate, $325 for expired driver's license) it's worth it for me to go to court if there is indeed a good chance that the fine will be excused. On the other hand, I'd hate to spend the day in court and still end up paying the fine.

Does anyone have experience with a similar situation? What's the best way to proceed?

My SO got tagged with expired plates, she filed for it go go to court, a year or so later she got a letter saying the ticket was dropped and no appearance was required.

Yeah I'd say that's a big DOH, cause I think as a driver you should know that your tags expire on YOUR BIRTHDAY and drivers licence every 5 years.

You need to go pay your tags and licence renewal and do as the cop told you, to avoid the fines.

If you have alot going on its easy to forget these things and its happen to me once before. By the way this guy asked for help, not for people to question why he forgot to pay in the first place.

I was in a similar situation and here is what I did.. Pay the fines and take the receipts to court. Most courts also have an area to pay for traffic tickets. Make an appointment to see a JOP or the crown and ask for the matter to be withdrawn. They should have the tickets removed on the spot. For me the whole time took was less than 2hrs. Make sure you get there as early as possible.

I once had my lic. suspended because I forgot to pay a ticket. I went and seen the crown. I have the ticket removed and my lic was reinstated in a few days with no charge.

Thanks

Count your lucky stars...

You are in one sense very lucky I think. The cop could have hit you with no insurance. Same thing happened to me years back. Only I didn't forget I avoiding paying because of lack of funds at the time. The cop that stopped me said that driving with out a lic or expired lic also voids your insurance and hit me with fine for that as well. I am sure glad this was before the law was changed and fine rate increased. Cause today driving with out insurance is $5000. first offense.

Get caught up to date ASAP and follow Nicole's advice... you may have it reduced or even forgiven... just make sure to have all your paperwork that shows you paid up asap after you got wrote up.

If you got caught without your documentation, or with expired documentation, always ask for a 24 or 48 hour report. What that means, is you have 24 or 48 hours to produce the documentation at a police station, and if you don't, you get a ticket.
