Where is the best place to purchase Domain Name(s)?

Are there scam operations to avoid?

Once purchased and registered: do you own the name(s) outright; do you have to pay an annual fee to maintain ownership?

Do you have to pay someone in order to have your site on the internet?

What is the simplest/cheapest or best/maybe not so cheap, way to get your website on the net?

Thanks

www.godaddy.com or www.10dollar.ca are the 2 sites i have used to get domain names.
if you have a name in mind , then do a search first to see if its available.
usually there is a yearly fee, i would suggest you pay for it rather then going for the companies that offer free domain names with hosting packages, these way u would own the domain name.

If you get a domain name for 10 or 12 dollars something is wrong. The basic fee to register a .ca domain is around $75 for a year...that is doing it directly with the organization that handles all of the .ca registrations. If you go through a web host they may pay it on your behalf, then charge you a small part of it and make it back through the hosting package. Not sure. But I would guess that .com would be more than that. All I know is someone is paying $75 bucks or so for a .ca domain name, so if you get it for less there is something else going on.

No, kumamake is correct. I also use www.10dollar.ca for my .ca domain registrations. I use namecheap.com for all of my .com and other domain name registrations.

I'm not sure where the confusion lies...I've owned domain names since the dot com boom (and bust) and I've only had to pay the registration fees to the domain name registrar (ie. namecheap, godaddy, etc.) every year or whenever they come due.

I manage all my domains through godaddy. Real user agreements carefully. If you do domain by proxy, you no longer own your domain name. I've lost 1 domain name when I didn't re-register in time so keep your payments uptodate.

^ agreed on what he said.

i use Lunarpages and they go through godaddy, but have a large volume discount that you can have access to if you get the appropriate package.

It's not a good idea to use a webhosting provider to register your domain names. Why? If you have issues with either the domain name registration or with the webhosting then it's going to be impossible to either move your domain registration or web files away from the provider.

The best solution is to use a domain name registrar for your domain name registration and a webhost for your hosting services.

way out in left field
only problem with godaddy is you get spammed continuously with their promos and from other sources. They're pretty helpful too, I had problems setting up my email and loading my page and they got back to me in an hour with a phone call and the guy walked me through it. Best part was NO CHARGE.......

Not a reseller...direct from the company that controls all .ca names. Go daddy and all of those others are resellers. They count on selling you the hosting package...so make back the difference there. But someone is paying the $75 or very close to that (they may get some sort of volume discount?) and you are paying via you monthly fees to the hosting company.

Are you talking about CIRA?

I would check that if I were you.

The company that controls all of the .ca domains is CIRA.

The public register .ca domain names via the services of a CIRA certified registrar. The list is available here.

At one time, internic.ca was the main registrar for a large chunk of the .ca market, and charged accordingly. Even they don't charge $75.00 per year now.

I have used both godaddy.com and www.namespro.ca for several years and had no problems. You can register a .ca domain name with www.namespro.ca for C$12.88 / yr.

Godaddy.com will charge US$16.22 / yr. for the name.

In an attempt to end the discussion, here's the official FAQ from CIRA (yes, the agency that controls .CA names here in Canada).

What is the fee for registering new dot-ca domain names? Registrars are free to set their own fees for services they provide to registrants, but CIRA will charge all registrars the same fees for registration services ($8.50 per year plus applicable taxes).

Thanks for the info and the links. I think the service I used was register.com and it is not on the list (although a register.ca is) but I did get my CIRA confirmation and membership, etc. so I think I'm ok in that respect.

It appears I paid too much...and my apologies my posts that added to the confusion.

thanks

Excellent advice. You can save a few $ by having your domain registration and web hosting with the same company, but if you ever have a problem you'll discover you were penny wise and pound foolish.

I use easydns for my domain registrations and DNS service. They have DNS servers in 8 countries around the world, which isn't something you'll typically get. They charge $19.00 CAN for a .ca registration, or $35 CAN for a package with domain registration and DNS service.

And being extra paranoid, I have my email hosted with a different company, Tuffmail.
