I think the best way to hobby in the USA, is to have a USD account with a USD Visa card, I have an EQ bank debit card and I can withdraw cash at any ATM without foreign exchange fees.

There's always a way around or at least reduced fees if you do the tiniest bit of research. I still remember trying to pay with traveller's cheques back in the day only to find out that many places didn't take them.

I am confused as to why a regular person, even a John, would need to carry enough cash in the U.S. to matter, though?

One of the reasons that muggings in large U.S. cities has declined is the decline in cash being carried around.
The Asian like to pay in cash and they still get caught or legally robbed.

What are traveler's cheques?
there is only supposed to be one fee when you buy
but in the US the banks like to charge a % or a dollar. plus more. IT is good to use at Walt Disney parks in the day I used them.

Do you really not know what are traveller's cheques? As the name implies, they are paper cheques that banks and credit card companies like Amex issue. I'm surprised that Amex and Visa still sell them, but I don't think the banks do anymore. They acted like a prepaid debit card with a fixed amount on them. Obviously, there's no way to "top up" paper cheques so you'd have to carry different denominations.

They could be used anywhere Visa and Amex were accepted and you could also get them replaced fairly easily if they got lost or stolen. I think I only used them a handful of times in the late 80's / 90's. In my experience, many places like restaurants didn't accept them. As with everything in finance, the cheques had fees attached to them, which is likely why many small businesses didn't accept them.

I was being facetious.

They will target Canadian escorts at the airport, easily just looking for well-dressed or stylish and attractive ladies at the airport, and search them for large amounts of cash. DEA is within good reason too, prostitution is illegal in the USA even though it's not the DEA's job to enforce it. To the DEA escorts, johns, pimps, and drugs are under the same umbrella.
It is due to a federal rule that prohibits entry into the U.S. of non-citizens and non permanent residents who are realistically suspected of engaging in commercial sex work within the preceding ten years, not the traditional state laws prohibiting prostitution. But I realize it is heavily enforced, which is why fewer Canadian escorts tour the U.S., and when Canadians and Australian escorts do tour, they don’t publicize that fact before entering the U.S.

And from my understanding, most of them have learned tricks such as how to make deposits/transfers of cash, and/or purchasing gift cards / transfers to minimize cash that they must carry around of cross the border again with.

Your original post was of course a very good one. A person learns the various risks points for each country and works to minimize risk. I think someone is acting unwisely by carrying around thousands in cash in the U.S. You are less likely to have that cash taken by non-law enforcement criminals in the U.S. than say, Brazil, where tourists are known to be robbed on the way from the airport. But more likely than in most other countries to have the cash taken by law enforcement that equates cash with crime.

But a tourist is more likely to be ticketed for walking against the Don’t Walk sign in Canada than in the U.S., and more likely to get a speeding ticket in a Europe from an automated camera than in the U.S.

You learn, and try to adapt. Information is useful, since The System in each country rarely changes.

Why do so many people here think just because you are carrying a large amount of money while travelling it' must be for hookers?

I always travel with cash. Never use my credit cards when I travel except for a hotel.
You don't need cash to go to the US....and US isn't the best for hobbying (i'm assuming that's what most of us here do why we bring cash).

What are traveler's cheques?
I last used traveler's cheques in 1992 when I toured 5 countries in Europe with my girlfriend. I was in my early 20s and got robbed at every place I went to change the cheques with crazy fees...

I remember one time we were in the south of France. With absolutely no money and no places open to change the cheque. I managed to have the manager of the youth hostel give us a bed in exchange for duties. I will always remember the look my girlfriend gave me after she had to clean the hostel toilets. 😷

But she found her smile when I suddenly remembered I had subscribed to a credit card just in case of emergency! So we went to feed ourselves with fish soup (bouillabaisse it was called) where she told me I was a moron. A nice moron tho as she still gave me sex that night ;)

Most of us aren’t drug people, so for many of us truly the only things we use cash for are sex and the occasional quasI-legal food truck where they don’t take cash.

With licensing, fewer and fewer such food trucks exist, so cash equals commercial sex, hence the erection upon seeing cash.

On a big picture scale, let’s be realistic here.

It is unfortunate that the country (the U.S.) that supposedly invented civil liberties practices so few of them, but these police seizures in the video are at specific gates for specific flights and targeted at Black men with duffel bags and large backpacks. So try not to be a Black man with a duffel bag flying those routes. Or driving a tinted window SUV in the general vicinity of Mexico.

The guy with an envelope in his front pocket (that he put in his front pocket after transferring it from his carry-on after running the carry-on through airport security) isn’t hassled about what is in his front pocket at the gate in the 0.005 percent chance of a gate search if he is Black of Hispanic or the 0.000000000000000001 percent chance of a gate search if he is Caucasian. And even high U.S. sex worker prices don’t necessitate that cash being enough to be seized if found. It can be explained as walking around money. If seeing many ladies, there are an abundance of free checking accounts at the thousands of banks in the U.S. So you carry five ATM/Debit cards in your backpack with Daily Cash withdrawal limits of $300-$500 each.

We realize that police departments in the U.S. partially finance themselves through cash seizures, so we learn to not tempt them. It keeps us safer from robbers and muggers, too.

You would think that sex workers would be the ones to bitch the most about our cashless society, since they have to figure out what to do with the damn cash, but they don’t. They just learn how to adapt and work with what the world now gives us, which in the U.S. is a close association between cash and illegal activity.

Definitely nerdy, but I sometimes enjoy watching retail transactions and seeing how many occur before anyone uses cash. Not only is it a long time, but the self-checkouts at the grocery stores, which is well over half of the transactional activity, requires them to stick crumpled dollars through a little slot in the machine.

Nah she married a nerd about 2 years later... A guy who became a millionaire as the Internet took off. Great guy who gave her 3 kids. But honestly, my kids are Brad Pitt Beauties compared to hers haha

But well she never cleaned a single toilet again in her life while me... I did and still do!

Men I still remember the laughs she would express each time I exchanged a cheque and see how screewed I got haha
