i was looking forward to another exciting season of leafs hockey with dougie in the lineup...well, looks like it's not gonna happen now...what a shame...the heart and soul of the leafs organization was forced into retirement with an injury. My question to terb members is "what was the REAL reason why the leafs traded dougie in the '96 season to the devils?" I've heard lots of different rumors...but does anyone know the real reason???

I did not know their was anything untoward on this deal .

I heard that they were fed up with him "owning" the dressing room and that it was time for Mats to take over.

What have you heard ?

I think the reason he was traded was twofold: Dougie was advanced in age for a NHL top line centre (33 years old in spring of '97 when he was traded) and in obvious statistical decline. Secondly the Leafs missed the playoffs that season and hadn't won a playoff round since 1994.

In Dougie's first 206 regular season games as a Leaf he had 287 points, they reached the semi-finals twice.

In Dougie's last 186 regular season games as a Leaf he had 165 points and failed to win a playoff round.

His age was advanced. Pat Burns had burned him out with the ice time he gave #93 ( like Jacques Demers did with fellow Kingston native Kirk Muller in Montreal). The team was in decline and looking to rebuild as playoff victories were quickly becoming a distant memory.

Isn't that reason enough?

And what did the Leafs get for Dougie...
Jason Smith whom they let go for nothing.
Steve Sullivan whom they also let go for nothing.
Alyn McCauly whom they traded to San Jose.
They should have got someone high profile that would have helped immediately. His most memberable moment as a Leaf had to be the OT goal against St. Louis in the '93 playoffs. That win was huge in the series. I think he made Cujo dizzy by going back & forth so many times behind the net.

What team will give up a high profile palyer for a player entering the downside of his career? The Leafs finished last in their division when Dougie was traded in'97( and hadn't won a playoff series since '94). I think most people realize that it's going to take more than one player to get you out of the basement.

And it was cute how you omitted Owen Nolan from your "nothing" equation.

They had some good players at the time. They didn't get enough in return for Dougie, at least as it turned out.
Oh ya it was Owen Nolan they got for McCauly but I didn't for nothing on that one. He sure is on the upswing in his career.

The rumor i heard was that there was tension in the dressroom between mats and dougie...how mats was not getting enough credit with dougie in the spotlight and i guess management realized that too and had to act quick on the issue. Thus the dougie trade...since mats was still young and would have his prime ahead of him. I'm not sure how true this is, but seems pretty reliable since i heard it from the ushers at the "Gardens". The BIGGEST mistake the leafs have made is signing John Ferguson Jr as the GM. (IMO)

Leadership can only do so much in the playoffs which is all he could offer at this point...
