ACHTUNG *RANT*!!

I honestly don't get the whole Doctor B diet thing. I mean really. You pay someone to tell you to eat less - apparently to a point of starvation? Oh, as a bonus, they jam you with needles, and charge you a King's ransom for it.

Funny, but I was friends with a lady who suffered(s) from Bulimia. Well, she informed me that she was on it, and I went ballistic. What Doctor who do that to someone who was currently in support groups for Bulimia?? Oh yeah, I forgot, the kind of doctors who get paid past their salary cap.

This lady's self esteem hit rock bottom, then started to dig from there - she and I no longer talk because of what she is doing. So, for all those people out there who are considering this approach, I got a suggestion for you:

For half the amount charged by doctor B - I will have you lose the weight in a healthy manner, and not rapidly.

Here's a hint:

Exercise, and cook your own food.

Everyone who reads this, please send me $100 for my time.

Sounds like you're a supportive, empathetic friend to someone who needs emotional support. Way to go, champ.

Well, considering that she basically believed this qwack over repeated pleas of common-sense - I had to exercise some tough love, and gave her the choice - this track of starvation, or our friendship - she chose the qwack.

What do you suggest I should have done?

IMHO a woman who suffers from bulimia probably needs less judgement and ultimatums, and more support. It would be nice if she had someone to turn to when she crashes.

It must be nice to be perfect.

I am hardly perfect - however, she has suffered from this issue for about 15 years.

I have been there for more than a decade, listening over and over to her problems - however, she would never seek the help.

Frankly, I put my time in, and it had to come down to me spending all of my time holding her hand yet again, or simply trying to focus on my "perfect" life.

In addition Fergie - if you are interested in losing weight - even if you are very overweight - simply cut out carbs at night, and go for a walk.

In six months - you will have a lot less on ya than before - why not pm me, and I can give you some actual healthy advice.

Howard, it sounds to me that over 15 years you were a terrific friend and did all you could do. Now, it's up to her. You can't let her problems affect your health. Sometimes you have to let people make their own choices, however bad. In the end she will call and you will still be there to lend an ear I'm sure.

Not being judgemental can also be considered enabling. You try being nice, you try gentle suggestions, pleading, begging, tears, but some people just have to learn the hard way.

Mrs. Stiffler,

I know, that just sucks.

She was a really great friend. Last I heard, she is getting help - all I can do is hope.

Thanks,

HH

Injections?!? Come on, if you're taking injections to lose weight then your first stop should either be a nutritionist or a real doctor.

Mike Bullard looked very frightening after he went on the program. Like, scary. He looked like he was dying or something.

The process of losing weight is simple. It's the will to do so that poses the greatest challenge. Once you have the latter, the former is easy. All these lose-weight-quick schemes are just that, schemes.

No sweat, no glory.

The really stupid thing is all you really need do is follow The Canada Food Guide and exercise for about half an hour a day.

Ask any dietitian and they'll say it's the best. You eat less and burn it away. A friend of mine did that and lost 100 pounds.

And when I say exercise I mean something as simple as walking.

a balanced diet is the only approach

I think that the challenge is that not many people know what a balanced diet is. Erroneously, people believe that if they stay away from carbs and cut down on the meat and cut out most fats they'll be good...Not so.

The optimum balance of a diet is about 40% of calories from carbs, 30% from protein and 30% from fats....Each gram of these contain about 4 calories, 4 calories and 9 calories respectively.

Cutting carbs out of your diet is bad because carbs actually help with things like memory but, carbs also get you moving. Their the quick energy that get your heart rate up and get you to a state where your body begins to really burn feul (fat) in a workout.

We need to be cognisant of the type of carbs that we eat. We should be eating low glycemic carbs (i.e. carbs that take a long time to break down to glucose)...this stops inulin levels from spiking.

Stay away from Dr. B, South Beach Aitkins and other fad diets. They get your weight down quickly but in the wrong fashion and are not sustainable...The Zone is a little better but the fact that it is called the Zone Diet is bad. The Zone is more of a lifestyle change.

A couple of years ago I was much bigger than I am now. I picked up a book called the Formula A personalized 40-30-30 Weightloss Program. There was no special foods to this. No gimmics. This is a book about changing one's lifestyle and the way the book is laid out they actually make it easy. (If you're willing to change that is).

It wasn't about eating less. It was about eating less crap and more of the right things. I never went hungry and in fact had some challenges completing some of the meals that they laid out. The book is essentially a cookbook with a ton of great recipes that I actually serve to guests they're that good (lemon chicken, chicken teriaki kabobs, grilled steak dinners etc, grilled salmon dinners, etc.). The recepies are divided by breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner. The portion sizes are classified by one's level of activity.

I now cook most of my meals out of this book and it's companions and yes, it is more work than heading to mcdonalds or ordering a pizza or heading out for wings and beer, but I'm healthier, my cholesterol is down and I'm thinner.

Interestingly enough, although I'm much thinner and my waste is smaller I've actually gained 15 lbs but most of this is through the shoulders and chest (muscle weighs a ton more than fat)

If you're interested here's the link to the book on amazon. If nothing else it will save you a ton of money signing up for some fad diet that won't work and will make you sick

I know someone who was on Dr b's program and apparently he is quite ignorant to you if you arent shedding the pounds... and he eventually kicked her out.
Guess he's worried about his statistics/success rate.
