when you exit to a highway, make sure your speed is max (90 for DVP and 100 for the 401) before you merge.. and don't let any person behind you press their breaks (yes they do look at the mirror when you change lanes).. you would FAIL for that..

I just took the test last month.

- you have to know how to do the following: parallel park, 3 point turn, emergency road side stop (they don't do the hill side stop anymore), merge onto the highway at 100km/h, also change lanes in residential areas, 400 highway (depending on where you are taking it), and also regular highway (80km/h), also make sure you can maintain your speed on the 400 highway evenly (no sudden bursts of speed or sudden jerks in slowing down)

- make sure you do the following: check your mirrors (I would say almost every 5-6 seconds--and really check like MOVE YOUR head lol they won't accept "I moved my eyes" or whatever), also check left and right of you when going through an intersection (and same again, emphasize that you are checking the intersection)

- and the obvious, use your signals, check your mirrors and your blind spots... if you can't do something legally, don't try to do it and go the speed limit :) 5km above is okay

- it sounds like a lot but really, if you can parallel and drive on the 400 then you are golden... just check your mirrors often and check both ways when driving through or proceeding through an intersection (stop sign or lights)

Big thanks to everyone that replied to my original post . All the tips and suggestions were very helpful and much appreciated. I passed my test. Hopefully this thread will help others as well who take the G test in the future.

Skimmed the thread so not sure if this was mentioned here yet:

- If you are concerned about this test, you should book a driving lesson or two with a driving instructor. I found it helpful to book two lessons back to back, so we had lots of time to get onto and off the highway. IMO this is well worth the time and money. The driving instructor knows what the tester will be looking for. They can also suggest which testing center to go to, and though they are technically not allowed to take you on the route of the test - if you smile sweetly they just might.

- Do not schedule your test in the morning or later in the afternoon. Pick a time when there will not be as much traffic! Late morning, early afternoon.

- I am a terrible driver and my instructor suggested I rent his car rather than use my own. The driving instructor's car has a break for the passenger, and an extra rear view mirror. The tester will feel more comfortable if they have a break and a rear view mirror. I really think this helped me to pass my test, but again I am not a great driver.

- If you do something during your test that you think means you will fail, don't give up. Just continue on and do the rest of the test. You never know, they may still pass you. It is also good practice... if you need to re-take the test at least now you know the route of the test, and what they will ask you to do.

- They will test certain things on your car before you leave. Make sure your horn works, all the lights work, your fluids are topped up, etc. If you're in an unfamiliar vehicle you need to know how to adjust the heat, windshield wipers, etc. Sometimes they ask you these things as part of your test.

Parallel Park is really the only one that you need to practice on. It's really the only thing I think I forgot how to do now :p I really don't use parallel park at all. Only areas you'll need it, is if you drive downtown maybe, which I never do pretty much lol
