The Sony is good, but the technology is outdated (no wifi or 3g).

I have the iPad, which is a nice toy. As 4tees mentioned, it is really too heavy to hold comfortably for extended periods. It's strengths are its friendly interface, websurfing capability and suite of Apple-familiar application (i.e., ipod, mobile me, etc). I HATE that it does not have USB. I don't care about Flash. As an eReader, it's weight is a big negative. However, unlike e-ink technology, you can read in complete darkness because it is "self lighted". In fact, you have the option of changing the font to white text on a black background, which is very comfortable for night reading.

If I were to get an eReader for reading only, the Kindle would be my go-to unit. Light, great battery life and free 3g access (for downloading books and wikipedia). Hella cheaper than the iPad too.

btw, I use amazon/kindle for ebooks. Waaaaay better selection than ibooks.

my friend has a kindle ebook reader from amazon.. I was playing with it the other day. I liked it, though I haven't really looked at others so take that with a grain of salt.

It has been getting good reviews though

I think an iPad would be best at this time.
A friend of mine is an e-book user and recently tried the iPad. I his opinion the iPad is great for surfing, photos, etc but sucks as an e-book reader. He can read his e-book anywhere without worrying about sunlight but the back lit displays are hard on the eyes and a challenge to read.

I like reading books but I haven't the time to read them cover to cover unless I'm on vacation so I don't know.

Make no mistake, this is the future of the publishing industry. The convenience of getting newspapers delivered wirelessly each morning (plus updated editions throughout the day) is fantastic. Same with magazines, etc.

Reading the iPad will be a problem in daylight (on vacation). May have to bring the Kindle for that.

I find having an iPad for reading books is a bit overkill. Its what...$700 with the wifi/3g options?

My android smartphone is less than half that, can do just as much, is probably half as heavy and has apps that can read ebooks in whatever format you are looking for. Good enough for me.

And I dont have to carry around another device. Already have a laptop, and a phone. Dont need a 3rd item.

Agreed. The ipad isn't really a utility device yet; still a novelty.

Besides eReading, I find that I am increasingly likely to turn to the iPad for websurfing. It's instant-on connectivity is a lot more convenient than my laptop. I can't seem to get my head around actually working on it (composing long emails, etc). It's too small for serious work.

Really? You'd rather read an ebook off the tiny screen on your phone? You must have some phenomenal eyesight. And you get about 1-2 sentences per screen?

the road of life.....
i have had a Kindle for a year now, and I am satisfied with it.
The kindle is single function, but works nicely.

The IPad is just too big. Do you see people carrying them around awkwardly - trying to look sophisticated yet trying not to drop the damn thing!

For what it's worth, the iPhone has the iBooks app on it for free, and I've downloaded it. While I would rather NOT read a book off my phone, doing so is a surprisingly positive experience. Eyesight is not an issue, and there is a goodly amount to read on each page.
I found the same thing with my iPhone - not hard to read at all. I have been nibbling on the Wizard of Oz (one of the free classics) when my SO is grocery shopping. Ditto - on using it as a primary reading tool but it certainly creates no eye strain if you want to use it for a short time.

I like my Sony but sometimes wish I opted for the non-touchscreen version which far less glare and better contrast for outdoor reading (its not bad outdoors but could be better). I like that I can "borrow" books out from the library with it and dowload/install other books from pretty much any source.

yes
not a fan of ereaders just yet. I have an issue with the "green" belief of an ereader. The typical reader needs to be used up to the equivilent of 100 books before the energy required to built it breaks even with the good old paperback.

On a lighter note how is one to browse the bookstore and smooze with the hottie if she is engrossed with her ereader. I feel they make you less open to outside interaction than a physical book.

thank for all the input. I think I am going to tryout the one from chapters for $149.00 and see how that goes first.

I am waiting for the e-book readers to have a digital pen like some of the Lenovo tablets do. It would make my life so much easier. No more textbooks. I can just take notes, highlight things, all while easing the load off of my back.

It's already here. eTexts are being used at UofT. You can highlight, annotate and bookmark in many readers (e.g., Kindle and Ipad).

The HP slate is the thing to watch out for.
