Don't know about you but this is how capitalism works, supply and demand and all that wonderful stuff.
What I don't understand is why any team would pay those obscene salaries to a player after only one good season.
Have everyone signed to the same base salary and then offer performance bonuses on both individual and team results would do wonders for consistency.

No this is not how capitalism works pro sports is how monopolies work

Monopolies are supposed to be controlled by government laws to prevent gouging but for some reason pro sports are immune

Not only are they immune from price gouging we build the stadiums for them from which they gouge us! Then if they do not fill up the stadiums that they are gouging from and that we built then the TV broadcasts are not shown in that area as a form of punishment (in the NFL)

I read somewhere that pro athletes get a nice pension from the league. something in the range of $800 000/year. he can live well with that type of money still

It's a different lifestyle. When you're a pro athlete it's not like you can get a Condo and go home and enjoy your private theater with friends and be done with it.

You get dragged out to clubs, you get all these people convincing you, you're a big time player and need this and that, etc.


It's hard to understand.

But at the end of the day, many pro athletes are intellectually not smart, and they often have shady accountants that make some questionable investments.

they want to show it off as part of the culture. they never think the money will go away or stop coming in. they are very naive in thinking that bling is a good investment or that the people they are trying to impress will be there after the money is gone.

just heard that some NFL dude put an ATM in his house. that should explain the mentality.
