Absolute horse feathers!

Nowhere in Toronto is there an area like West Baltimore, Downtown Detroit or The Bronx. Don't be such a Chicken Little.

As for regicide in London England, I wouldn't go that far. Just banish them back to Hanover.

Toronto is not comparable to American inner cities with respect to violence but Toronto is experiencing increased crime rates, a phenomenon whos seriousness should not be mitigated by referencing foreign countries. This will not help to treat Toronto's problems.

The gun violence is for the most part localized to thugs killing thugs. And the occasional bystander who is hanging around with thugs.....so do what I do. Don't hang around with thugs and get involved in the drug trade. Don't hanf around the sketchy parts of town. Be situationally aware.

As for the mentally ill it's so rare. I pass them all the time in my travels downtown. Never had an issue. I wish we could get them the help but as long as the law says we can't they will continue to do what they do.

Just about what I was gonna say. Yes, Toronto, like any place, has it's share of crime. The good thing though is that most of the violent stuff has a reason (i.e. targeted to people involved in activities in which violence is an option; drugs, gangs, etc.). Even the notorious Jane & Finch. I lived close enough and realized that since I'm not apart of 'stuff', the worst that could happen was being robbed (never was).

Put it like this.... Those involved have enough to worry about to hurt someone like me. Keep clean, and you're not worth the trouble.

For those trying to justify Toronto as being "the safest city in Canada" you really need to read the legend on how StatsCan determines the crime's weight

As an example, a second degree murder conviction has a score of over 7000 compared to a manslaughter conviction of 1800
So statistically City A could have 3 manslaughters in Year 1 and appear safer than City B with 1 second degree murder
For most of us we could care less about WHY the crime was committed, but in general someone who plans to kill his redneck wife for insurance money (City B) would certainly feel safer than a city where 3 drug dealers accidentally shoot some school kids during a failed drive by (City A)

In addition to this there are different standards of prison confinement.
In a smaller City C a marijuana crime could get a prison term, where an international metropolis like City D might give the possessor a warning
Statistically C looks far more dangerous (700% worse!)

And this is not even getting into some of the odd rankings (to me)
Why is attempted murder considered so much worse than a Pedo raping a child?
For that matter why is a robbery worse than a Pedo??? Who makes these rankings at Stats Can?

Breaking & Entering a home is considered worse than Luring a Minor?
Counterfeiting Currency is more serious than Uttering Death Threats or Criminal Harassment?

Bizarre...

Anyhow based on the Violent Crime Severity Index Toronto is ranked 12th most violent place in Canada
And there are many safer places (even Hamilton lol really???) around us contrary to most peoples perceptions
Assuming for a second you believe the asshats over at StatsCan then move to Hamilton or Windsor since they are so much less violent crime

Murder rate has doubled. For everyone shot and killed, there would be maybe 10 people shot and wounded.
"Safe" also depends on your lifestyle and where you live in Dodge City. However, the sad truth is that as long as there are humans there will be crimes, even violent crimes. To say more would be politically incorrect and open one up to accusations of being racist and/or bigoted.

Those Bay street guys can be quite the racket when the market goes sour.

Saw a guy get so mad once, he drove a Porsche right past me.

I only ventured in that area to visit Lovecraft but haven't been in years.

For sure lifestyle makes a difference.

Notice downtown people often avoid eye contact with others on the street, think to avoid being harassed by beggars and thieves. Was surprised watching the video couple months ago of the guy being hacked up by the guy with a machete, and no one stopped to help.

You are confusing percentages with numbers of crimes
Umm yes, a city of many millions will have more crime than a village of 200. That doesn't make the chance of you being a victim any more though. One victim out of 200 is the same chance as 15,000 out of 3 million.

I will admit last time I went to Yorkville I felt robbed; drink prices were ridiculous.

So close and yet so far.
I drove downtown last night on an errand, destination Yonge and Wellesley, then drove up Yonge (past Yorkville) to Eglinton. Eleven o'clock in the evening, and the streets were full of people, all ages. It didn't look the least bit dangerous to me, but what do I know?

Also, canvassers soliciting for Sick Kids, I am a Girl, Plan, etc.

BTW: Dundas Square is starting to remind me of Times Square in the early 90's.

You should stay at home. Invest in bars for your windows. Consider moving into a gated community. It's safer that way.

The only thing that's hazardous about Yorkville are the overly efficient parking maids.

Its Canada
It really is not dangerous

But the idea Toronto is the safest city in Canada is stupid (to the contrary it is one of the most unsafe, see my post above)

Another stat to throw out is very few crimes are truly random
Most murders / assaults / even robberies are committed in a very small circle as most of the time the victim knows the criminal
So by avoiding certain types of people and places you really are even less likely to be involved in a crime
