$100 for 500GB external is not unheard of. Power users would do well to buy the drive and the enclosure separate. Also, why Mac users? Back up software is as old as dirt.

I've got no desire to get into an argument over the relative merits of different technologies.

OS X comes with Time Machine (a revolutionary backup system). All it requires is a large external drive. Because pretty much every Mac being used today has Firewire, and newer Macs have Firewire 800, this particular drive is a great deal for them.

Well it is a Maxtor which had serious quality issues. Seagate then bought Maxtor out. Is there any evidence Seagate took care of Maxtor's quality problems?
I will only buy Seagate or WD drives.

Revolutionary my eye. Revision control meets backup for the masses, oh my. You can drink the Kool-aid if you want, but spare the rest of us.

None that I know of, but Maxtor's quality has been up since a few years ago when they would drop like flies. Both brands probably share platters and other components when it makes sense financially. If Maxtor doesn't come with Seagate's warranty, I probably wouldn't bother.

Oh? I don't pay 30% mark up on hardware to play King's Quest or whatever it is you do. I don't pay 30% mark up to do anything. Maybe you should sit and think on this before you call anyone an idiot.

If any of you Mac users are looking to purchase an external drive (for Time Machine backups for example), tigerdirect is selling a 500GB Maxtor external drive with triple interface (USB 2.0, Firewire 400 and 800) for $100.

Good price. I was eyeing that from their e-flyer. Call me cheapo , but at 100 bucks mark that is what 500GB external should be nowadays.

The only small thing bothering me about this Maxtor is the limited return policy that it comes with, which is very common for discounted items at TD.
