In the laboratory.
My sister runs Home XP on her computer. Everytime she starts her pc, the Windows Media Player pops up in the centre of the screen in full mode. It didn't do so when she first got the machine. It just sat there, available to run a cd or dvd but not otherwise prominent. She must have changed some setting but what could it be? Grrrrrrrr!

I run Win2000 and I've never had this happen to me. What the fark do I do to rectify the situation on her machine? Would unpinning the media player from the start menu work? Any help would be much appreciated.

P.S. Yeah Winston, I should have bought her a Mac instead.

- start
- help and support
- under the heading "pick a task" press "tools"
- left column press "system configuration utility"
- right side press "open system configuration utility"
- press the tab that says "start-up"
- scroll through the list untill you find the "windows media player" and uncheck the box beside it press apply and restart.
presto!!!

You would also be well advised to uncheck just about everything in that list. Your boot times will be much faster.

I concur with much of your advice in this regard, but suggesting unchecking everything is a bad idea - for example you are recommending people disable management software for wireless devices (e.g. if they need a working keyboard or mouse & happen to be wireless), anti-virus software, spyware scanners & firewall software. Anything that changes the registry (such as the fixes you suggest) is best used with caution and requires a degree of expertise. Unless you plan a lot of free support calls for everyone who develops sundry problems following your blanket advice.

You are correct. I accidentally left the word "about" out of my post. It should have read "uncheck just about everything in that list."
