My dentist is my cousin, so no scams. Pretty good way to go if you happen to have a family member who’s a dentist.

There are a lot of scumbag dentists out there. Big fancy offices with a lot of staff have huge overhead so they go out of their way to max out your insurance. Some are heartless too, charging full pop to seniors on limited income. Dentist are required by the College to charge the same fees for everyone insurance or not. If you pay cash, meaning you don't have coverage,he's helping you out by charging less. The standard check up and cleaning is comprised of the check up part $33 usually 2unitsof time(2×$55) for scaling and $31 for 1 unit of polishing for a total of $174. If you want to rattle the dentist or hygienist's cage, ask them how many units of scaling and polishing they will be doing today? And look at your watch before and after. Just to keep them honest. Sometimes they say they are doing a deep periodontal scaling which allows them to use a higher paying code for essentially the same cleaning. That's why some cleanings top$200 unless the total scaling time was 1hour continuously
. Xrays are usually taken every 18months to 2 years for 2 bite wing rays. Not every 6 months. Unless you have a problem area that needs an xray. Some dentist try to scare you by saying your silver fillings are poisoning you and should have them replaced. That's a pandora s box because a tooth that.was perfectly fine becomes sensitive which may lead to the dentist suggesting a.crown or root canal which both are big.ticket items. If you have old big ass fillings that don't bother you, leave them be.
The dentist is required to get informed consent prior to any treatment. So ask what needs to.be done and how much. Don't be forced or guilted into treatment. Unfortunately many dentists are money grubbers instead of health care practitioners.

I don't have private insurance and every time I visit the dentist, it costs me an arm and a leg. I am now living in a province that has particularly high dental rates.

For example, my last cleaning and exam was $400.

Today I went in for a minor procedure and the dentist pressured me into getting a full exam, xrays, and two fillings done.

She had told me I should get three done, but the other one was just discoloured. At the last moment I asked if we could just do two, and she was taken aback. There was an awkward silence, as if I just swore at her, and her reaction was so unprofessional.

"Okaaaaayyy....." in a very condescending and sarcastic way.

Instead, she should have said, "Sure, no problem, we can always do the other one when you're comfortable.

I didn't want to do it because it wasn't really necessary, I didn't want to do so many at once because it's uncomfortable, and I really can't afford it. The dentist has no right judging me. I am a customer, and she should respect my wishes.

Also, I had one terrible dentist before this who literally botched every filling. I had to replace three or four fillings that she did on my front teeth within one or two years because they were so poorly done. The other dentist at that clinic told me I needed a root canal on the front teeth. Later, I found out that it was a lie, four other dentists I saw after never even mentioned it. I am so glad I didn't do it, because it would have weakened my teeth.

Basically, what I've noticed is that every dentist I've seen is a money hungry and pushing many procedures at very high costs. There is definitely a focus on making as much money as possible by doing as many procedures as possible and taking so many xrays.

Has anyone else felt this way about dentists. I really dread going to dentists because of:

the pain
the sights/smells/sounds
the rude/condescending/judgemental dentists who never have anything nice to say about my teeth
the outrageous bills I get
the unnecessary work they do that damage your teeth
the pushiness

I am so fed up. I wish I had a friend who was a dentist and another who was a dental hygienist!!

</rant>

I feel your pain.
I solved the problems with the Dentists. Got tired of the expensive dental bills plus expensive dental hygiene cleaning.

I realized the root of my problem with the dentist is I don't dental floss every day. Even though I brush my teeth every morning and bed time.

So I decided to buy the best & thinnest dental floss ( " oral B Glide" / you can get it at shopper drug mart ) and buy lots of dental floss at least 4 packs dental floss.
I made it convenient for me to dental floss. I put one dental floss pack in bathroom. One dental floss in my bedroom and one dental floss in living room.
One dental floss in the basement.
And you know what... I discovered if you have easy and convenient acesss . You then floss your teeth more often and I dental floss every day or every night or every evening. I made sure after i dental floss don't eat again and brush my teeth every day or before bed.

The result is that I don't get cavities anymore and don't need to see any dentist anymore for cleaning .
Problem solved... No more cavities anymore.

I like the disposable picks rather than floss. The ones with the floss on one end, pick on the other. I find them more convenient and more comfortable to use than standard floss. Between those and the mouthwash tablets from Lush, it’s made a big difference in my oral hygiene routine.

A dental hygienist once told me that the dentist she worked for will size a person up. If he thinks a person can afford his work, then he will recommend the maximum of work. If he thinks a person has limited means then he will give them a lower rate to fit their income. The bottom line, do not drive up to his office in a BMW 6 series wearing a Rolex watch.
Great tip. Dress like a hobo for your next dental appt.
You do not have to dress like a hobo to not get fleeced by a dentist. Some dentist will charge one person more than another for the same service. I know a guy that has a dental practice that does exactly that. He will take the maximum he thinks he can get away with to fund his lavish lifestyle. He had a leased Jaguar SUV last year and he has recently leased a Porsche SUV, but he drives to work in his loaded $53k Camry. Even he knows how bad it looks for him to drive his expensive toys to work. I am not saying that all dentist will take advantage of their patients, but to let them know you can afford to pay more is to invite higher prices for yourself.

My guy is great. Years ago when I didn't have benefits, he let my make payments in monthly installments. He explains everything very clearly and he's not at all pushy. I've referred a few people to him. I'll give you his contact info if you want.

Kinda surprising to read all the complaints from folks about 'their' dentist charging too much. That's free enterprise, and you're free to go elsewhere to find a better price. If you'd prefer the power of collective bargaining, join a group with a dental plan, or get active politically, tell your MP and MPP it's long past time that our healthcare didn't stop at our mouths.

Not that it matters now, but one of the things Ontario voted against when they picked DoFo, was adding dental care to OHIP. That was part of the NDP and Liberal platforms. Of course taxes would have gone up some, but the complaint is we're paying more now.

Apparently the board wants more socialism and more socialized medicine.
