Firefighting - good career?

I'm considering entering this occupation. Does anyone here do it.. could you list the pro's and con's to being a firefighter in Toronto.

Cons: Being burned to death.

Seriously I kinda wanted to be one in my youth. My theory is you actually go to very few dangerous fires, a lot of it is false alarms and EMS.
They are very a brave lot, though. Good luck.

I wouldn't recommend it due to the health risks. (I.e. higher rates of lung cancer among firefighters due to being exposed to smoke on a regular basis).

Don't know much about it myself but...

Have a friend whose son was considering being a fireman. He was very excited and all gung ho about it. Even took some kind of course. Not sure what the course was exactly but he was there 8 months. Soon after he got a job at an auto body shop. Now he wants to be a bodyman. Go figure.:)

The Truth!

It is a fun career. That said... There is too much bullshit out there. young guys see firemen on TV and think it would be cool to be like these guys. The problem is that Human Resources in TO has made it impossible to be hired for the job unless your a minority. there is so many people on the TFS that have no business being there I could go into detail but to do so would hurt people I know and work with and they are nice but just not able to do this job.

It is great to be fair when hiring but just because there are a few women on the job doesn;t mean that an ephasis should be put on hiring. the same goes for any minority applying.

Hiring should be limited to 1st. Volunteer Firefighter
2nd College grads

And never open anyone with $50.00, by doing it this way -already trained firefighters get fucked over in favour of politically correct bullshit. ( IE You never hire a lawyer by advertising to the public, giving everyone a chance to apply both those with and without a law degree, with the reasoning that after they get hired we'll send him to law school). The same applies here!

As for courses the colleges put it out ther that students will be able to get jobs afterward this is bullshit...every year 100's graduate only to find that are no jobs. and the education you get is from a "pre-entry fire fighting course" everything you pay to learn will be taught to you after you get hired. don't take courses because they won't help you get hired just unempolyed in your chosen field and in debt for $5-8,000.

Anyone who tells you otherwise is most likely trying to get you to spend money on what ever they say will help you.

I am an officer and i knlw what I'm talking about-trsut me find something else to do.

Pro: Pussy, lots of time off, good way for low IQ guys to make good money.

Cons: Danger of toxins, bad shifts, lots of PC issues as described above.

Pro: Highest on the pecking order above Cops & paramedic. Smokeboys amalgamated with the amb. gang few years back.

Smokeboys with powerful union get better toys & benefits. In industrial accidents, the paramedics are send in as canaries, while Smokeboys watched. While Smokeboys are ones with gas mask & protective gears.

Newsflash buddy, HR doesn't set the policy to hire minorities. It's direction from the highest levels of the organization. Usually b/c all they've hired in the past is white males and, goodness gracious, the organization might actually think it makes sense to have a workforce (and a public one at that) which is actually representative of the people it serves. Shocking!

I agree that it is a high-level command to hire that way. I think it is a big mistake though. For cops it makes sense, they are constantly dealing with people and need to reflect the people they are serving. Firemen on the other hand do not to interact much, they just have to carry the person out of the building, so they should hire the most capable and leave the righting of old wrongs to the police and the civil service.

Actually as a medic we stand outside and let the fireguys use their protectuve gear and breathing apparatus and they go inside. Not our job, thats why they get paid more and die sooner !!!

multi, exactly, that's suppose to be how it works.

In few GTA calls, my buddy and others in their unit were told to go in, rather than Fireboys to bring victims out. They filed complains but probably fell on deaf ear, with board dominated by Fire people.
