Just downloaded Avast anti virus software; but, it doesn't have a built in firewall.
Just wondering if anyone knows if there is a decent free firewall somewhere out there.
Thanks for any ideas.

zonealarm has a great free version. It can be found by googling or at download.com

Commodo is what i use on all my machines and those of my clients. Its a bit of work and sometimes annoying (as it questions a lot of things when first installed) but thats what you want, something that checks out traffic it does not recognize.

Comes with a virus program so just select the Firewall ONLY installation.

filehippo.com carries it along with a host of other freeware.

Good Luck

Great thanks for ideas.
I downloaded Comodo because it is an integrated product with anti virus and firewall together and I like that.
It looks like a really nice product. Like it so far and would recommend it to anyone.
I'll give Zone alarm a shot next time I feel like experimenting with different products. Again thanks for all feedback.

Always use a hardware firewall. Software firewalls are like getting a dog to look after the hen house ... It's effective until something goes wrong.
