I wasn't aware that the "liberal left" disliked Abe, or that anyone gave him much thought. Unless the guy is really notorious - i.e. Putin or Kim - he gets a nice little tribute. If the deceased were Orban or Erdogan, the tribute would be carefully worded, but it would be given.

Presumably if Abe knew, all his staffers and govt officials knew too. So there's no point shooting just him. And anyone with that much to lose would use a nice, hi-tech sniper rifle with a professional marksman firing it.

Actually, I read that was one of Abe's little pet projects. Basically some sort of Holocaust denial about the Nippon WW2 war effort. Not that this had anything to do with that. Was surprised, is all.
Just goes to show that one good guy with a home made shot gun could have stopped a bad guy with a home made shot gun.
