I am sure this has been discussed to death in this forum or the lounge... but I had to rant. What the fuck is Microsoft's problem? I can't buy a fucking PC that does not come loaded with fucking garbage Vista OS?! I should be able to choose if I want Vista or XP... so if I am doing something wrong here (like shopping at the wrong places) please let me know.

in my pants, where there's a party
Smaller dealers might be able to sneak by with an OEM version, but as per Microshaft, the window (pardon the pun) to sell PC's with XP has been closed since May.

Might be time to switch to Ubuntu.

I'll second that!

Last year I set up a dual boot system XP/Ubuntu to learn Ubuntu at my own pace.
Right now I don't need MS or Apple at all!
I can do everything on linux which runs faster than MS and the kicker is it's all FREE.

Got a new laptop with Vista but hardly ever run Vista either. Set the laptop up to dual boot with Ubuntu and it runs even better on the laptop than on my old desktop.

Just started playing around with another linux distro, openSUSE11.0 to give it a try....it's nice also but am still learning it compared to Ubuntu which I know well.

Hey it's all free, so why not.
Don't worry too much about Vista getting you down, because next year MS is getting ready to pick your pockets AGAIN when they roll out their 'brand spanking new OS' Windows7....

Can Ubuntu run most or all software designed for Windows XP?

Yes, if you use the WINE app, Ubuntu can run most of the software designed for Windows XP.

However I never bothered since Ubuntu comes with ~266 'supportred' apps and programs of its own, even more if you go into the 'unsupported' apps, all free. It's a whole other OS, kinda like moving from Windows to a Mac only it doesn't cost you a penny!

That's the beauty of a dual boot setup, you can learn Ubuntu at your own pace and still have Windows for a backup.

You can give Ubuntu a test drive by running a Live CD.
All you do is go to the Ubuntu site (where they will give you all the directions you need) and download an ISO file then burn it to CD, then pop that Live CD in your PC and you can run Ubuntu off the CD to see what it's like without installing it on your PC.

Or you can go http://distrowatch.com for more info on all the free linux distros currently available.

out there
Vista sucks!

I bought 2 laptops back in May, almost identical in speed and memory except one has Windows XP Pro and the other has Vista. I use the Vista machine most frequently because it's for personal use mostly while the XP machine is used occasionally for work.

I am always AMAZED when I fire up the XP machine. The speed and reliability is incredible! It makes me feel like I just got off my riding mower and jumped into my Corvette!

I always have a good laugh at those commercials with Mr. PC and Mr. Mac. Vista sucks!!

I looked at a mac. They are fucking expensive!
I want to get a quad-core next.
A quad-core PC with a 19" monitor and speakers costs around $800.
A quad-core MAC with no monitor and no speakers costs almost 3 Grand, then you have to buy a monitor and speakers!
So linux is free, uummm more money for the gals and not MS or Mac.

What do you linux guys think is the best and easiest to learn linux?
I may have to look into them. I have XP now and hear bad stuff about Vista so it seems you are better off waiting for Windows 7 next year.

If you previously owned a computer with XP, you already have a licence to use it, and should have a copy. Load that.

Go to one of those small PC shops on College/Spadina and have them put together a PC for you. Tell them you want XP on it. Done.

Very right, lots of new equipment only loaded with vista. Built my own system from scratch and loaded it up to the max. Put on XP Pro and runs like a lightning bolt.

Install VMWARE (free http://vmware.com) and then you can run as many images as you like at same time providing you have sufficient memory(which is cheap anyways). That way you can run ubuntu, XP, Suse , wtever you like at same time. That way if you trying to run a Windows app that does not work with ubuntu/WINE (and there are many I have discovered) you just hot button over to Xp and you are in business. As the the other OP said, ubuntu is free and performs much better then windows and it is ammune to virus.

You might not be able to. If enough of your system has changed, WinXP won't work and you have to be a new OS (Vista).

Just wondering if the Vista you are running has the latest service pack. That service pack was supposed to make quite a difference.
