Getting closer to shifting from the ol'bb to an iPhone...and still trying to do some homework before venturing into the shops.
I gather that the 3G phones are third generation....what exactly does this mean. I believe it is telus that advertises the largest 3G network in Canada...and I've heard that Rogers is still pushing the 2G phones? Is this significant? I want it as a phone, e-mail, music/pod cast, camera device, probably in that order of importance. Does the G-force affect this functionality?
So, what's the deal? Is 3G better than 2G and is 4G around the corner and will be better again?
Many thanks...always appreciate the wit and wisdom of the Terb community.

2G = 2nd generation. 3G = 3rd generation. 4G = 4th generation.

3G is faster than 2G. 3G is HSPA. 2G is EDGE. 4G will be known as LTE and it should arrive in 2011. 4G will be faster than 3G or 2G.

Most of Rogers smartphones are 2G. Majority of Telus and Bell smartphones are 3G. You won't notice a difference between 2G or 3G unless you plan to browse the web heavily. Since you mentioned you're eyeing an iPhone, Telus, Bell or Rogers all offer 3G for it.

You should check with each carrier to ensure they don't have any dead zones where you plan to use the phone. Also, read the fine print and contract so you know how long you have to return the phone. Once you exceed that period, you're stuck with it.
