I have a workmate (lets call him Ziggy) that has a serious gambling problem. In less than two years he has lost his wife, son, and house, and if he shows up for work this Monday his job. I can't blame the padrone for firing him hes just plain fed up. Ziggy has in the last six months missed more than two months of work. This last bit of absenteeism was the last straw.

We have all tried to help Ziggy. He has gone to counselling and spoken with others with the same problem. He knows gambling is destroying him but he just can't pull himself away from betting on the horses. Hes won big. As much as $6000, and when he wins he goes on these crazy binges of prostitutes and alcohol that can last for days. Hes says 'its high like no other.' When its all gone, its back to work. The last few months i can really see how it has taken a heavy toll on him. I have seen personally the effects that drugs and alcohol can have on friends, but this is my first time witnessing the effects of gambling on someone close.

Ziggy looks grubby and unshaven most days, he hasn't purchase anything new in years. He lives in one of the most sleaziest neighborhoods, full of low track hookers, heroin addicts, and unsavoury sorts. Does it get any worse?

Question...

I am wondering although what i see is the gambling, if there could be another underlying problem that is the root of his problem? ...maybe mental illness of some sort. I asked him to go see a shrink, so far he refuses. Anyone have any thoughts, ideas, experiences with this problem? --- Kev

It is pointless trying to help him. He has to want to help himself first.
He obviously has not hit "rock bottom" yet.

He's gone to counselling so he took the first step. But if he's lost more or less everything to date and he's still doing it, there's likely not much else to be done. Give him your phone number and tell him to call you when he's ready.

Gambling addiction/Casino Niagara.....True story....A close friend of mine's Sister is a dealer at Niagara Casino & she told me that over this past winter some poor guy lost $500,000 over the course of a weekend playing at the tables....his last night there he returned to the hotel room and shot himself...As my friend's sister is a Dealer at Niagara Casino, I very much beleive the story....The dirty side of gambling (ie. destoyed lives) is something that neither Casino Officials nor provincial governments advertise in their pamhlets....I wonder why?????

Thats the thing about gambling and alcohol...............its legal. Yet the detriment to those that can't deal with it is horrendous. --- Kev

Exactly it's not even called gambling anymore but gaming , when did that happen. The unfortunate part about hitting bottom is that some peolple die before hitting bottom ( through suicide ) this applies to cocaine and gambling because gambling is a drug.

It's got to happen in his own mind - the benefit of not gambling becoming more valuable to him than the benefit (high) of gambling.

Until that point, he's on a roll that won't be stopped.

This really sucks Kev. I hope he makes it.

I used to work at a commercial casino and trust me everyday ppl lose their savings, their homes, and their lives. Its a sickness thats very hard to treat. Plenty of ppl commit suicide cause they have no outs, no shot at repaying their debts. Its sad. But real.

Casino Niagara's the worst for suicides from what I hear.
And you thought the Bloor Viaduct was bad.
