hey...

i'm in the market for a GPS, but i don't have a clue as to what i am looking for...

i've seen prices range from $150 to $600...

does anyone have any suggestions as to what features are useful, and which ones are just a waste of money?

any help would be greatly appreciated...

thanks...

I have an old one, that has some limitations: it takes a long time to lock onto the satelites, and it has no maps, just the coordinates. I use it for driving, not for hiking, so my maps do not have GPS coordinates, which makes it hard to use. I intend to buy another one, with fast satelite tracking so you can turn it on and see where you are.

It also needs to have the maps built in somehow. A customer of mine has one that connects to his laptop, so he can download maps, then have the laptop display his position on the map using the GPS data. For me, I want an integrated unit that shows a small map, ideally with some means of updating the map from the Internet.

The Garmin eTrex Vista is a very full featured model with ampping, compass, barometric altimiter, and ability to attach to a PC. I think it is around $350 cdn.

It depends what you want to do with it, and how much room you have for it. I have a Garmin 168 map/sounder. It is a fixed mount, can connect to your PC for upgrades etc. can be loaded with "blue chart" maps of anywhere they have the software for. Depending on the sender you use, it is a depth / fish finder, can give water temp and speed.

There are others with bigger and smaller screens, depending on where you want it for. If you want to spend upwards of $1800 you can also get into colour screens.

Again, like has been said - determine what you want it for!

Have you tried Lebarons yet?

I was looking into them a little while ago and they had the best selection, The little Garmen one with the map incorperatied into it works well. A coworker has one It works well as long as your relative to the 401 and not too far north of the us border as the map program is limited...Mind you his is a year old so they may have better software now.
