AFAIK, Opel has been 100% owned/run by GM since 1929?!
That is almost correct. It was 80 % ownership in 1929 with the remaining 20 % acquired in 1931.

Growth through internationalization 1990 - 1999

Opel makes significant progress in expanding its model range, in new product technology and in the internationalization of the Opel brand. The Opel Technical Development Center in Rüsselsheim, Germany becomes the core of General Motors' international product development strategy and the lead source for design and technology. Opel makes considerable investments in the expansion of existing European plants and operations and in new production facilities worldwide. With the increased capacity, Opel is ready to introduce the Opel nameplate in new markets around the globe.

Apparently it arrives in North America in 2011 as the redesigned Saturn Astra.
Kind of late in my opinion.
You probably meant Aura. The Opel Astra is already here as the Saturn Astra.

Typical GM, a buck short and a day late. Honda releases ther cars worldwide within a year so does Audi and VW, what is GM's excuse. If I were running a car company I would want my best product on the market as quickly as possible. I suppose they can advertise it in 2011 as the 2009 european car of the year....and let people know they will be buying a 2 year old design. The car looks pretty good, to bad the clowns can't get it to market on time.

To some degree the North American unions were blocking the Opel imports because it cuts into their number of jobs. But I guess at this point the unions are not as rigid anymore.

The GM name drags the value down.

I took a look at the Saturn Astre and decieded to buy a Canadian made Japanese car. The Astre europe has a good reputation in Europe, and they even use it as police cars in the UK. I liked the car, and it handled well. In the end it was better for me to buy a Ontario made Japanese car, it will keep its value much better over the 5 years I plan to keep it, it will be cheaper to maintain, and it will bring me better resale value when I trade it. As a low use second car, it is a better choice for me. The Astre will loose value just because it is sold in so small numbers in Canada, and it has the GM name on it. I must say, my impressions are, the Astre is almost a VW.
