I've read that some sources say a deal is near or done for a deal for these guys...anybody else hear/read anything?

(I read this in the Hamilton Spec by the way)

We need a decent backup goaltender. Kidd is looking week and tired. Telquist is an unsureity.

Why would you want to pay for Kolzig if Belfour isn't done for the year? Kolzig is a frontline goaltender, not a backup.

If the Leafs do make this trade, it would make indicate to me that Belfour is seriously injured.

Well the leafs never really did let out the extent of Belfour's injury. But with his inconsistant play time its safe to assume that Belfour really is hurt. With Belfour day to day you gotta cover your ass, imagine having Kidd at playoff time, you could kiss the Stanley cup good bye.

What was Toronto to be giving up for this?
I heard on the FAN590 today that three players in question from Washington coming to Toronto is more wishful thinking than anything else. Washington is looking to get value for these 3 and from what I hear it is anywhere from 3-5 players off Toronto's roster plus draft choices.

Well considering what Washington got for Jagr and Bondra (hmm, only Anson Carter)...they wont get equal value and they know it, moving those players is clearly a cost cutting move, why dont they throw Lang in the deal too!

Kolzig and Gonchar would be slary dump, but Witt is only making 1.75 million and in this era I wouldn't consider that a salary dump.

I don't know if this trade will happen but I suspect that if you do see Kolzig and Gonchar in the trade that some prospects and/or possibly Stajan or Coliaccovo going back the other way. Doubt that Washington would want Antripov or Berg as they aren't playing that well.

I'll believe it when I see it. I really doubt the Leafs will be willing to part with the necessary talent (i.e. Coliaccovo). Of course, if Belfour really is hurt (which I don't think he is), then anything is possible.

Where did I say that Washington got value for Bondra and Jagr. From what I heard and read the Caps are searching for equal value for these 3. So expect more than Antropov and (not or) Coliaccovo plus someone else to move along with draft picks/prospects.

Bob Mackenzie during an interview on a Washington radio station suggested that the deal being worked on is Lang, Gonchar and Whitfield to the Leafs for prospect Pierre Hedin, along with Carlo Colaiacovo, Nik Antropov and Tomas Kaberle. The Leafs are reportedly the front runner in the Gonchar chase. The stumbling block between the two teams is Colaiacovo, which the Leafs aren't ready to trade. The Caps are insisting that Colaiacovo should be involved, but the Leafs aren't willing to bite just yet.

I agree.

The more you look at this trade for Gonchar & Kolzig, it makes sense. Belfour is hurt and his contract is up at the end of this year. Kolzig would become the no.1 goal next year. It makes sense as Toronto would be picking up a hefty salary in regards to Kolzig (6 million/year). I still can't see Witt being part of the deal however.

Given the backlash in Washinton with parting with Jagr and Bondra, you can be sure that Washington will want some good prospects and/or players coming back the other way.

I suggest they do something. Fergeson said yesterday Belfour could be another week. I'm thinking Eddie will rest as much as possible, then make this and all or nothing run, then pack it in this yr like Roy and Hasek.
Last nights win was huge, but again, still too many GA. Another week of backup will be tough to watch.

I to think Toronto needs to do something soon, heard that they have placed Belfour on the Injury Reserve list.

If you look at Toronto's schedule, they have Carolina tommorrow then Florida, games that they should be able to win even with a back up goalie. But then they face Tampa Bay,New Jersey, Boston, NYI and Buffalo. All these teams are fighting for position in the standings.
