What free texting apps would you recommend to protect your privacy? Or, would you recommend getting a pay as you go phone? Do they still sell those? If so where ?

Thank you

Use "TextNow" ... has a purple icon... allows for pin... alot of other apps have popups... this one has adds within the chat... but not as annoying

TextMe is another good free one. You can stockpile credits to make calls by taking a few minutes to watch ads in your free time.

711 plan

+1. The credits expire in one year, so it’s perfect if you don’t hobby that often. Go to 7-11 and use cash to buy the credits instead of using cc. Less paper trail.

Make sure you check the balance often though. Once, I got to an incall location and found out I had no more credit. Could not send a text to the agency and had to resort to using my personal phone.
711 is good option. SIM card goes in most phones. I bought a cheap phone and use the 711 text plan - only $10 month. But their text/talk plans are reasonable.

Get a cheap pay as you go phone at 7-11. You can get the phone, the SIM card and $25.00 in credit for a little bit over $100. Sure the apps are free but if you're using it for hobbying there are agencies and indies that won't deal with the apps. If you must go with an app I've used TextNow with no problem although it's annoying if you're not using it regularly because they'll cancel your number.
How can they tell it's an app number?
