Goodbye Maple Leafs

Corey Schwab has just signed a contract with the New Jersey Devils. What’s wrong with this picture? The richest franchise in Canada losing another goalie, only this time to the skinflint Devils. What does it mean?

In case no one was watching ill winds were blowing when it was announced that Knob Hill Farms had gone into insolvency, Stavro’s position within the organization became tenuous and it would be only a matter of time before a coup d’ e tat occurred. It has happened, The Ontario Teachers Pension Fund has assumed control of the franchise. What that means is that it has become “soft Ballard”, as long as the golden goose continues to lay the eggs, there really isn’t much need for maintenance.

So much for maintaining tradition, this is supposed to be a storied franchise and Ken Dryden told us he had a five-year plan to bring The Cup to Toronto. Dryden always was a man of integrity and I believed him. But The Ontario Teachers Pension Fund doesn’t give a rat’s ass about a winning tradition all they’re interested in is profit. I’ve just come to the realization that I will never see a Stanley Cup victory for the Leafs in my lifetime.

What the Leafs desperately need is a sugar daddy. A Steinbrenner, an Ilyich, or a Cuban, an owner who’s making money by other means and the franchise is a hobby. The only people who could save the Leafs from the deplorable state I foresee for them are the Tanenbaum family. But Larry Tanenbaum considers himself a basketball man first and foremost; also he won’t make a move to take control of MLSEG until the ACC is paid for. In the meantime the Blue’n’White may be allowed to reach a level of disrepair wherein a butcher like Guy Kinnear could become Leaf trainer.

…So much for tradition.

That leaves Belfour and Barasso as the goalies.
Two of the most controversial goalies on the same team.
Now this will be fun !!! Nevermind the hockey, the antics these guys can pull will be more entertaining.

kat,

what i'm saying is the leafs need some new young kid, no one's ever heard of. eddie's no long term solution but it's not like the guy is about to die of old age either. i think he'll give the leafs a couple of good years and hopefully he could help to groom a replacement.

a goalie needs to have an intangable 'magic' as well as continuing to develope their skills. correy is a #2 goalie for life.

From what I've heard The Ontario Teacher's Pension Fund is in deep trouble. They invested heavily in Nortel and Enron, and have lost millions. The Eaves government should demand a forensic audit of their books, but that appears unlikely.

Ticket prices have been raised 15% across the seating spectrum, but the fans will receive nothing in return. If Dryden,Quinn and Watters are men of integrity, they should resign immediately. Let Leaf fans see what the OTPF are all about. If they hire a J.P Ricciardi of their own then we'll have our answer.

Put Christie Blatchford on it!

Aldo there are definitely a few skeletons dancing in a lot of closets at the moment. I have a friend who is privy to some of the inner workings down at the ACC and he told me that in certain circles there is a legitimate concern that at some point the RCMP will become involved. He says it's a tangled mess and the spin doctoring has already begun.
It may be time to get out the Lysol.
Can you say Bruce McNall?
How about John Spano?
I agree that Dryden is a man of integrity but lately he sounds like a beaten man who is frustrated by the current state of affairs in Leafland. There is a definite power struggle between he and Quinn. If he could, I think he would make Quinn strictly the coach............reduce his clout..............bring in Gainey to run things..............and they would both answer to him. He would also fire or at the very least put a muzzle on Bill Watters. He has been leaking things to certain members of the media for years and apparently Dryden doesn't trust him as far as he can throw him. Either could Mike Smith.
There is a definite story here that someone like Christie Blatchford could dine on for months.
(providing HER hands weren't tied of course)
A great starting point would be how Stavro slithered through the grass and snaked control of the team in the first place. You could throw in a few anecdotes about Yolanda giving ol' Harold BJ's down in the bunker between the second and third periods..................with a little Bill Ballard meets Mike Cohl thrown in.

PS- it was funny to hear you mention the 'Gunner'. Don't forget Frenchy Lemelin too. LOL

Sheeez, I thought we had some problems here with the Sens!

This may get worse before it gets better. A Coach\GM does not work in today's NHL. Just too much to do. Quinn's health does not help the situation. He's got to pick one or the other. If he can't, the descision has to be made for him. He's a good coach who has taken teams & turned them around, but the turn around is brief. The lack of depth in the Leafs farm system combined with an aging team and no recent free agent signings, is proof that a full time experienced and connected GM is needed! A GM who knows everything about a player before he signs him. ie Robert Reichel

Is Wendel's back any better?;)
Would love to see him play one more game!

Some pretty bleak posts here. Unfortunately I agree with the sentiments expressed on this board. Quinn is just hanging on to his job as the GM so that he can continue to be the coach.

I don't know what role Waters plays but if he is responsible for wooing potential free agents he really has screwed up. The leafs have not added one single free agent. (Belfor is not new talent)No good forwards defenceman or back up goalie.

OK so they signed Belfor. He is definately not the same calibre as Joseph. He has won a cup before but he is unstable and needs a good stable back up behind him. Maybe Schwab is not the back up, but sign or trade for a decent back up.

Maybe they were in a tough situation with getting something for Joseph last year but they got nothing for him. They could not trade him because of the playoff run. So what do they do? They allienate him and he signs, for the same money they offered him, with the wings.

Then have not traded at all to imprve themselves. They have lots of money and can trade for people that less well endowed teams teams can't pay. (Less well endowed with loyal fans that they can take advantage of)

This feels like when Fletcher traded Kenny Jonnsen. (This was the begining of his downfall not the Sundin trade that was a good trade. You will notice that Cliff always metions the Sundin trade when people talk about his record but his memory becomes foggy about the sense of the Jonnsen for Wendal trade) In Cliffs case he traded the Leafs talent into oblivion. Quinn and Dryden will drive the Leaf talent into oblivion through inaction.

Further to that Quinn's statement about the longer contracts being foolish because of the looming lockout. WTF as far as I see the free agent signings did not have huge bonuses with smaller salaries down the road, asure sign that agent are worried about a strike, so how do the Leafs lose if there is a lockout.

Also is Anders Hedberg still scouting/evaluating talent for them because if he is not there they will be able to uncover the European Gems that they have in the past.

Well..........I see that Tony Amonte has just signed with the Coyotes. Unbelievable that he would rather play in that hockey hotbed in the desert than come to one of the greatest hockey cities in the world.
Problem is..........it's not the city, as we all know. It's the franchise. We are now seeing the domino effect of not signing Cujo. Hockey people in the league have come to the conclusion that the Leafs lack the commitment to winning that owners such as Mike Ilitch have.
Can anybody explain to me where the millions of dollars profit that the Leafs made this year is being used to improve the team? Please don't tell me it's going to Keon Clarke.
When Steve and Larry get back from the Cayman Islands maybe they can tell us.

PS to drg- Anders is long gone............saw the writing on the wall I guess.

The leafs are just fine.

When Yuskavich comes back were talking a big difference. I just hope they sign Flury. You guys watch because with the fire and demermination that little guy can bring this city will make him into the next Gilmore. I have for a long time looked at Flury as being able to be one of the best in the game. And as for Belfore. LOL. Some people forget what this guy can do. He is like a smarter steadier more consistant version of Cujo. He knows how to win. Forget last year. Organization trouble, Runins with the law, Hitchcock, the lack of suport ect.............. We will be just fine.

Leafs lose another one!

Pretty sad that the Coyotes can outbid the Leafs and get Amonte for 4 years at $24 million.

For some reason the Leafs were reluctant to pay Amonte more than the $5.5 Mogilny is making.

I'm surprised that Amonte could have come so relatively reasonably priced.

Free agents without compensation deserve a premium price and are vigorously sought after by teams that want to do more than just talk about wanting to win.

Hard to imagine the Leafs doing better next year.

At least we get to watch Domi's fighting skills deteriorate over 3 more years.

Kathleen, if you get Fleury, he can keep Crazy Eddie company, being he's a bigger lunatic than Belfour.
