The best place to buy is Radio World on Steeles East of 400. They actually know the products and can make good suggestions, and they have tons of different models. At the big box electronic retailers, they know nothing, and have no selection.
I have had three Garmins and been very happy with them. I buy an update every few years, it depends on how often you go to recently constructed places. I bought a map about a year ago, but it does not have the extension of the 410 in it. You just have to still use your common sense about what it tells you.
