Just my experience.

I do my S.O's hair. Yes, she is a woman. She buys the product at some form of hair store, and I apply it. Cost is minimal. I even do foils. I have to tell you, the results are great. She has had her hair done by her stylist and paid $$$$$$$$ for it; maybe he does do a better job, but you would be hard pressed to tell the difference. Now, I hate doing it. The pressure is enormous to "get it right." But, the blow jobs are more frequent if all is well and good after she blow drys her hair. (Hmmm wondering if her stylist ever got the same appreciation).

If you’re over 50 wouldn’t it be better just to accept the grey, mentally. I’m mean hopefully you wore your hair as you wanted when you were younger. All things fade, especially beauty.

I perform DATY on a white (partially) hair pussy of a long retired
MPA once in a while. I won't want her dye it black.

Grey hair on a man, looks distinguished. Grey hair on a woman? Not so much. That's all you need to know.

The need is primarily professional. It has been pointed out to me that I work in a "young person's" vertical, and that my hair makes me look like an old man. It's costing me business. Right or wrong that's the reality.

kkelso - Of the responses, this is the one I'd back the most. oagre gives the most accurate way for achieving the best possible look.

The only thing I'd tweak from his reply is seeing an expensive salon, or spending $200. Neither would be needed.

IMO, what you would like to avoid.
- Going to a place like First Choice to get a color done, or doing it yourself using any products at Shoppers. They will all look bad.

Two options I'd suggest.

1) Going to any salon at a mall close to you. I'm a natural blonde, but do highlights every two months at a salon at the mall, the results are amazing, and its affordable .

I'm guessing you have shoulder length hair, doing a full color would be $60-$80. It should last you 3-4weeks easy, and the next couple months, would be just root touch ups, which is faster and cheaper.
Even considering doing some 'highlights' , they look great on men.

I see guys in the salon all the time doing root touch ups, and getting highlights. When done, they look 15yrs younger. You should be roughly $80 tops, and it will last a month.

2) If you wish to do it yourself, or even the 'root touch ups' between colors, use professional products. Go to a place like Sallys, and buy a tube of color (natural to your current), brush, bowl to mix, and activator.
The color tubes are $15, the activator is $10. Again, this will last you 3-4 wks, and look 100 times better than any Shoppers Drug product.

Grey hair looks great on some guys, but I totally get hanging onto your youth too.
Shaving their head works too, but someone love to keep the hair, especially if its not thinning.

Good luck, and stay young :)
Did I mention you're awesome! :)

Now days, kinda got like the Silver 'highlights' coming in (naturally)! --- I'm down with the look!

Thank you Kathleen. I was truly wishing to stay out of the salon, as the last thing I need is one more appointment in my life. However, that does seem to be the consensus.

I have often heard the same rationale from my lawyer friends who work in the criminal trial counsel field. It is perceived as a "young trial stud's" area of the Bar and older men are thrown on the rubbish heap and pissed on. So older guys dye their grey or white hair.

Divorce lawyers don't have the same age-ist environment and it is not an issue in my field. In my area, old = "crafty" and "smart" and the "young pit bull" trial counsel image doesn't sell as well. So I can age into a grey and wrinkly old geezer and I don't lose any business - unlike my aging criminal counsel law buddies.

Aveda Men 5-Minute Natural Grey Blending

Aveda Men 5-Minute Natural Grey Blending is a 95% naturally derived** formula and is infused with a plant oil blend including certified organic sunflower, castor, and jojoba to help keep hair looking healthy and is designed for colorists to blend away grey right at the shampoo bowl in a quick 5 minute processing time. Customized for every shade of grey, Aveda Men 5-Minute Natural Grey Blending includes 5 pre-blended shades, ranging from light natural to dark ash which provide male guests natural looking, low maintenance grey blending specific to the look that they are after.

“A lot of guys aren’t totally comfortable with the amount of grey they have but don’t know anything about simple, low maintenance options to minimize their grey,” says Ian Michael Black, Aveda Global Artistic Director, Hair Color. “If your client has a moderate amount of grey throughout his hair but it’s really concentrated in a few spots, it might look more balanced if the amount of grey was evened out all around. Aveda Men 5-Minute Natural Grey Blending can do that in just a few minutes at the shampoo bowl.”
