Pitching is everything in baseball and, if the reports are true, the Phillies are loaded with starting pitching.

Let me get this straight .. The Phils sign Lee cause they prefer hallway last summer but the next summer they get Lee and pay him way more then Roy . Roy 5 years at 100 and Lee 5 years and 120 million ..
According to the Toronto Star, Lee's contract is 5 years/$100,000,000 .

I am not saying I am right but I got my figures from ESPN

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=5917145

Although it's still confusing no matter what amount ... They in a round about way last summer said we want Roy over you and then they convince him to sign with them ... Wow they are not only good on the field but in selling ..
It seems pretty simple from my view. Last year, at this time, they were unable to get Lee signed to an extension, but knew they could trade for and sign Halladay long-term. So they essentially traded Lee for Halladay.

Phils want to trade away Joe Blanton; but, that's going to be a hard contract to unload for a guy who's making 9 million next year and had an ERA of 4.82 last season.
Phils would have to pay half his salary to get people interested in talking about a trade.

Red Sox will have moved up to 178 million or so rent district too for coming season once they finish filling up their roster.

Wherever I shouldn't be

True, but there's a reason they play the games, too.
BTW, Redsox have Lester, Bucholz, Beckett, Lackey, DiceK, Wake. They had them last year too. Didn't make the post season, but healthy, with the bats?
Need a bullpen, but if they're healthy and get some relief..............117 wins here we come.
I'm just so happy the EVIL EMPIRE lost out on Roy and Cliff.
Adding Ruben Amaro to my Xmas card list, and next time he's in toronto multiple hours with the SP of his choice.

Anywhere there's a Strip Joint
I love it, first the Yankees lose out on Crawford, and now Lee. They always think everyone wants to sign with them by flashing the money. FU Yankees.

Truly impressive arms but that lineup is on the decline. Victorino, Utley & Rollins are good players, but Ibanez stinks and Mr Whiff Howard is an albatross of a contract.

Unless there is something that I don't know they don't have the revenue streams too support that payroll.
Ludicrous post.

Do you seriously think you know more about their business than they do? How can you possibly know what all their revenue streams are and how much they generate?

On the other hand, aren't there some baseball and hockey franchises on life support? Heard that the Texas Rangers were in the ICU until Nolan Ryan and his fastball saved them.

They're basically guaranteed a shot at the world series for the next 4 years. I can't think of a better rotation EVER.

The 1971 Baltimore Orioles had 4 twenty game winners.
Dave McNally had 21
Mike Cuellar had 20
Pat Dobson had 20
Jim Palmer had 20.
All had over 225 innings pitched and the highest ERA in the bunch was Cuellar with a 3.08.

If the Philly Fab 4 can beat that this coming season I'll call them the best rotation ever in a season.

The Yankees pay for fans behavior.
I heard from several sources that Yankee fans poured beer on Lee's wife during a Texas Rangers visit to Yankee Stadium. The way I understand it, it was intentional, but not sure if the NY fans knew she is Mrs Cliff Lee.

Wins are a lousy measure of pitchers' abilities. The 1990's Braves had a better rotation than those Orioles. So did the '55 Indians (Garcia, Score, Wynn, Lemon).
The Dodgers had a pretty good rotation in Koufax, Drysdale, Podres and Osteen:cool:.

Did you know that no Yankee pitcher has ever won 300 games?

That's not unusual, I mean very few pitchers have won 300 games pitching with just one team.

Not Maddux, Seaver, Sutton, Carleton, Niekro.

I do believe Niekro pitched his 300th in a Yankee uniform, does that count?

And trading off salary is harder to do when teams know that you are desperate.
I would say there's lots you don't know. Here's some excerpts from an article that may help you understand:

http://blog.pennlive.com/patriotnewssports/2010/10/bank_on_it_the_philadelphia_ph.html

the Phillies will carry a string of 123 regular-season home sellouts into the 2011 campaign.

Averaging 45,028 fans per game this season, the Phillies ranked second among the 30 Major League Baseball clubs, trailing only the New York Yankees.

Since moving from Veterans Stadium to Citizens Bank Park in 2004, the Phillies have been enveloped in a perfect storm of ticket sales success: Winning baseball + a superb venue + a passionate fan base = millions of fans visiting South Philly each summer.

Even though five new major league ballparks have been built since CBP opened, the Phils’ home still ranks near the top.
Matt Angle of BallparksofBaseball.com said Citizens Bank Park ranks as one of the best ballparks in the country.

“In my opinion, it’s one of the best ballparks in baseball,” said Matt Angle, who started the website BallparksofBaseball.com in 2000 and has visited 31 major league venues since 2004.

“Many great amenities, like Ashburn Alley, plus a good location and not a bad seat in the ballpark.”

While working at The Vet, with a seating capacity of more then 56,000, Weber remembers the team setting annual goals of drawing 2 million fans per season.

“When we moved, we wondered if we could get to 3 million,” Weber said. “We’ve averaged 3.2 million since moving here, and if you would have told me that eight years ago I would have laughed at you.”

As a long time Phillie's fan I'll let you in on a secret about "terrible" Philly fans. Even when the team was in last place playing in a lousy venue like the Vet they drew 25,000 per game. How many teams can boast that? Most .500 teams don't draw as many as the Phils did when they stank. Hell, I was in Seattle in 95 when they had a tremendous last season comeback to win their division and beat the Yanks in the playoffs. They didn't draw 15,000 per game but used that emotional season to get a new stadium they don't go to.

One reason there are misconceptions about the Phillie's financial resources is that for years under Bill Giles they spent like a small market team but are anything but that. Everyone thought they were poor but that was far from the truth. Another drawback for them trying to sign free agents (besides being cheap) was no one wanted to play at the Vet. Eagle's had the same problem. New stadiums for both teams helped turn that around, plus ownership willing to do what it took to be a success on and off the field.

BTW, the Eagle's have a nice little 86 game sellout streak of their own and a pretty long waiting list for season tickets. Say what you want about Philly fans but they support their teams like few cities do.
