Should have built a bridge and/or tunnel when we had the chance.
Anyway, I think I heard the city caved. The LGBTQ2 and Islanders are a powerful lobby.
I think you made this point in another thread. Miller killed the bridge that would have connected the mainland to the airport. That bridge would not have helped people to get to Hanlan's Point or the rest of the islands. It would have only replaced the very short ferry between Bathurst and the airport. The tunnel that we actually built also doesn't help people get to Hanlan's point.
The closest distance from the mainland to the rest of the islands beyond the airport is about 1KM. I guess we could continue the existing tunnel to go beneath the runways and then to Hanlan's beach. That would not be cheap though and would go unused during the winter. We also have no idea about the complexities of building tunnels beneath active runways.
A bridge from the mainland would not be very practical. It would have to be as their are lots of boats and some tall masted ships that use the harbour and the airport flight path to deal with.
Maybe someday the city will need to explore a tunnel or bridge as the supply of vessels, parts and operators goes down. It's the basically the same debate as tearingdown the Gardiner. Do we spend billions for a tunnel or bridge or keep the ferries going?
