Here
This is stupid. Ive anchored off of Hanan's tons of times and its not even close to being a LGB-whatever spot in years. These people are just looking for a cause to wine about.
Nothing stays the same, the city is growing and needs a plan for all the parks. If anything else they should put more useable beachfront in and a new ferry terminal over by the western gap.

I saw one of the Island residents (squatters) interviewed on TV last night. He is against bringing more people over from the mainland. In fact, he said there are already too many as is.

More MIBY'ism by the entitled class.

Not quite sure where the city would put another ferry terminal. Ontario Place is a possibilty or maybe the bottom of Spadina? Either location has a lot of boat traffic coming through though.

Should have built a bridge and/or tunnel when we had the chance.

Anyway, I think I heard the city caved. The LGBTQ2 and Islanders are a powerful lobby.

I think you made this point in another thread. Miller killed the bridge that would have connected the mainland to the airport. That bridge would not have helped people to get to Hanlan's Point or the rest of the islands. It would have only replaced the very short ferry between Bathurst and the airport. The tunnel that we actually built also doesn't help people get to Hanlan's point.

The closest distance from the mainland to the rest of the islands beyond the airport is about 1KM. I guess we could continue the existing tunnel to go beneath the runways and then to Hanlan's beach. That would not be cheap though and would go unused during the winter. We also have no idea about the complexities of building tunnels beneath active runways.

A bridge from the mainland would not be very practical. It would have to be as their are lots of boats and some tall masted ships that use the harbour and the airport flight path to deal with.

Maybe someday the city will need to explore a tunnel or bridge as the supply of vessels, parts and operators goes down. It's the basically the same debate as tearingdown the Gardiner. Do we spend billions for a tunnel or bridge or keep the ferries going?

During the Winter there is usually a fixed ice link. I heard of people using that to skate to and from the Island.

I think the Island has its own fire service but you would be in deep goo if you had to go to a hospital because of the lack of a fixed link. Wouldn't you feel really sad if one of the Islanders (squatters) died because they couldn't get him/her/they to a hospital?

I suppose they could get him/her/they off the Island by boat, helicopter, air ambulance, etc.

The city hasn't been cold enough to sustain walkable ice in the harbor for quite some time and you obviously wouldn't count on it. Toronto Fire is responsible for keeping the harbor ice free so that Ward's island ferry and smaller boats can get back to the mainland.

There is a fire / EMS station in the same building. It is close to Algonquin Island where the homes are: https://goo.gl/maps/ekcjNmJZF4m79vMW8

I doubt they could perform any surgery (emergency or elective) there, but they should be able to stabilize someone for transport. I would think that transport by boat would be faster vs driving the length of the island to the airport perimeter fence and to a helicopter. I don't see any obvious helicopter pads near Algonquin Island.
