Once in a while, when booting up my Lenovo desktop, it freezes during the
self check (when it shows the Lenovo logo), with a colourful band of static
superimposed on the screen on top of the Lenovo logo.

Anybody know what component of the system is going bad?

I always suggest you run all your diagnostic and AV progs first. Next move on to your drivers. Visit the Lenovo site for updates and fixes. Google your problem and see if others have the same problem and solutions they have found.

Mechanically it could be loose parts such as memory sticks, cables etc.

Good place to start.

Have you tried calling for warranty assistance? Were they not helpful?

You need to contact Lenovo support. You have trash in your BIOS.

Actually, from your description, it sounds like your video card may be dying. If it was your bios, it would have balked before the Lenovo screen.

Agreed. Also it's not a driver issue as the driver is not loaded until the OS loads. If you video is integrated on the MB you're most likely looking at replacing the MB.

Another thought, could be memory. If you have more than one DIMM remove one at a time and see if the problem is resolved. Hopefully it will be memory as that would be the cheapest and easiest fix.

check the Lenovo site to see if they have diagnostics to download, I'm pretty sure they do.
