perhaps your next posting should explicitly state technical details only and opinions forbidden as then you won't need to freak out on your fellow TERB members. By saying you want to spy on your girlfriend, you should have expected someone to take the point of view that it is not a nice thing to do. I let my friends surf the net and have never had the urge to check on thier habits DESPITE the fact that the phone line, ISP and computer is mine. I do have a simple suggestion on how to guestimate how much or little a site has been looked at... but your response to my comments is needed first....
This is the post that got me riled up. Combined with some goofy thread in the massage section. Someone else earlier simply asked why I didn't just chat with my SO about this and I answered respectfully. I wansn't expecting a morality lecture like wumpscut on this board of all places. I thought it was a straightforward question. In fact, I seem to recall people asking about it the past, except asking how to erase thier history. I apologize for breaching some kind of code of moral anti-spy behavior. Let me speak a little s l o w e r. I did not intend to set out to spy on her. I scrolled the recent history of my computer to look up one of my own sites when I inadvertantly stumbled on some sites that had questionable names with down right despicable content. I asked my SO about the sites and was told that she stumbled upon them by accident. I just wanted some kind of idea how long she had been on the sites, perhaps for my own peace of mind.

Fernie: Hey, there's some weird sites here, did you visit these Mrs. Fernie?
Mrs. Fernie: Yes, I stumbled on them by accident.
F: Wow. Did you look around at them, or close them right away?

Scenario A

MF: Umm, no. Actually, as soon as I saw what was in them, I closed them. Icky!
F: Okay. So what's for dinner?

Scenario B

MF: Yeah, I checked them out. I looked around a bit and was thoroughly disgusted. I don't think I can eat right now, just thinking about it. Can you make your own dinner?
F: Okay.

Scenario C

MF: Yeah, I checked them out. I didn't know you could gut someone with a bread knife. Which reminds me, can you run out to get a loaf of bread for dinner? *evil grin*
F: Eeeek!

Scenario D

MF: Umm, no. Actually, as soon as I saw what was in them, I, umm, closed them. *eye-shift* So, what do you want for dinner?
F: Hrmmmmm.

Here's a new concept ... TALK TO HER! Ask her about it, don't worry about all the clandestine, knees bent, running about advancing behaviour. Be frank and ask her about the sites.

It will ease your mind.

Question

Pete Townsend uses credit card to buy kiddie porn. When busted, he explains that he was simply doing research for his book. [He admits he was sexually assaulted as a child.] Do you take his word? Or investigate a little further?

If you find questionable content on YOUR computer, are you willfully blind if you just ignore it?

Last I checked, I wasn't married to/living with/sleeping with Pete Townsend.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.....

Obviously there are trust issues that go way beyond this event. And I am aware of the irony of me saying that, but it doesn't make the statement any less true.

Re: Temporary Internet Files

For Internet Explorer:
If you open the 'Tools' menu and open the 'Internet Options...' dialog box, then click the 'Settings...' button you will get another dialog box with a 'View Files...' button. Click on that and every file from every site visited since the last time the cache was cleared will be there.

You won't be able to see how long somebody surfed, but you'll get a good idea of what they were looking at.

You can delete these files by pressing the 'Delete Files...' button on the first dialog box.

HTH,
XD
Sorry, don't have a machine to try it on, but there should be a folder with all the url's and I'd imagine if you right click on one them you'd be able to see when they were created & could figure out how long, in a round-about way.

(not what I expected for my first post - but got to stop lurking sometime:)

Well sometimes I think he "doth protest too much " . I can also appreciate some of Fernie's frustration . He asked a relatively simple question and he gets inundated with a bunch of "Dr. Phil " ( or whatever that Oprah guy's name is ) wannabe's who can't resist in dispensing their dime store psychology or opinions .

His mistake was in saying why he wanted the info .

Actually, his mistake was calling us "pathetic" and then requesting our help in finding out why he doesn't believe his girlfriend.
Yes , not the most diplomatic approach and not one designed to solicit the help one wants , but the short fuse only started burning when someone questioned his right on moralistic grounds to obtain the info ....which is a whole other debate .
