Interesting statement. I sort of guess I should check every industrial country to see if that broad statement is true. I do not that in France based on first hand observation they require you to pay for your health care and then will reimburse you something like 70% of it. Also of course like most of Europe it is only available for their full time legal residents. I remember a lot of press in France about the system being rated the best in the world by the World Health Association. Most hospitals etc are for profit providers.
I went with someone to emerg in Ireland (they hand their hand crushed in some rigging and I was the first person on scene). All residents are entitled to some kinds of medical services. But only a little over 30% of the population get the coveted Medical Card free. (Low income, disabled, long term medical problems etc. The visit to emerg cost the lady €100 since she was a resident but above the poverty line. If she had visited a GP and waited it would have been about €50. She elected to not stay in the hospital because the stay would be €100 a day. They do however claim to have universal health care. No one objects to the universal health care costs since it just comes out of general taxation and is not a visible separate tax. I guess the Medical Card seems to cover the medicare the US used to provide for their poor.
I guess "universal" does not include free for users in at least some industrialized countries

You think it's not done here also? That's a joke. Many companies today hire by contract only or several part-timers so they don't have to cover them under their benefits package. I know of several employees who would love more hours to make it a full time position but alas, it's not happening.

what made america great was its free market capitalist system. now they keep falling down world rankings when it comes to everything. just because the rest of the western world has done something stupid like embracing socialized medicine it doesnt mean america should do the same thing, a bankrupt country btw. all of this is a liberal pipe dream, socialism is destroying the western world europe is a mess, america is a mess, and canada will be there soon enough unless we make radical changes like we did in the 1990's. what these businessmen are doing isnt a political statement, they are taxed and regulated enough they are in the business of whatever it is they do to make money. they are tored pf the govt telling them how to run their business. now with those over 50 ft employees they are gonna make the necessary changes, so now instead of a full timer buying their own insurance, they will just get their hours cut so obamacare has made them worse off. maybe this employee doesnt want health insurance bc he's 25 and healthy....well too bad.

I don't know where you live, but this is a Canadian website based in Toronto Canada. We have had universal medicare for almost 50 years here yet you are railing about Obamacare ( a watered down introductory version of Medicare). I guess you think health and security is only for the upper class and the rest can just suffer. I find it odd that those who think helping the disadvantaged is evil Communism are often the proponents of Christianity, a religion in which Jesus promotes sharing and caring for the meek.
At any rate, Canada is doing economically better than the U.S. despite its' extreme version of "Obamacare"!

But that is for additional coverage, Rx drugs, dental etc. Those people can still see their doctor or go to a hospital without having to pay the exorbitant US fees.
I think the big mistake was that instead of Obamacare, health coverage should have been called Protection And Treatment, Resistance & Inoculation Over Terrorists (PATRIOT) and then all the right wingers would be in favour of it.
Gee I always though that Medicare had been in place in the US fsince 1965 and covered something like 50 million of them. I thought the new system was tying in the middle and upper class to the government systems.
But since I am not familiar with it, and since I am unwilling to do some research, I guess I have nothing further to add
and you think obamacare is gonna fix that? quite the opposite and heres why...if you are in good health why are you gonna buy health insurance? its cheaper to pay the penalty and not buy health insurance. guess what? if you become sick, you can buy health insurance! so obamacare not only destroys the job market, but the insurance market as well as all these people will start to drop out, and older people with insurance will see their premiums rise as a result.
No, that was exactly my point. Obamacare is not the same as government healthcare (like OHIP)
