I went too Shouldice as well the only problem I had was they didn't give me enough sedatives.

I heard everything and felt everything and told them too stop.

I am above average size guy so they called in the anesthesologist (spelling) , too make me more comfortable .

Something too be aware of .
I don't know if any other hospital would agree to put you under anymore.

First, the public hospitals are probably under alot of pressure to do it as an outpatient procedure and get'em out the door in half a day. Not to mention the slightly increased cost and liability risk every time General anesthetic is used.

Personally I wanted to be wide awake and follow the situation and to be able to give or refuse consent on certain things in the unlikely event of a complication, so I asked them to make sure I remain awake and alert.

I was aware that would mean feeling some pulling & tugging. None of it really hurt - it's just very DISTURBING to feel someone using physical force right above to your balls.

On the other hand, my uncle claims he fell asleep in the waiting area and doesn't remeber any of it. He dreaded going through the experience. I guess the Demarol helped him get to wehre he wanted to be.

Yes it does. I was knocked out cold for my hernia procedure.
Same here...And no, I don't think I'd like just a local a 3 hour operation. I'm not saying all hernia repairs are 3 hour jobs, just mine.

Between a rock and a hard place
I had the umbilical kind repaired 3 years ago. It was an outpatient procedure. I was well in 2 days.

They gave something, possibly demerol, to take the edge off, after which I rolled over and fell asleep. The nurse woke me up saying they didn't want me sleep just relaxed. I'm relaxed already, get on with it.

None of the hernia operations at Shouldice are out patient. Your there over night all the time for a least one night.

I was knocked out for my appendix operation, you guys dont wanna go through that
See I got lucky, my first hernia was a 2-in-1 deal. The doctor repaired my hernia and removed my appendix. It had been pulled up into the hernia. What it means though is if I ever go in with abdominal pain, I have to tell the doctors my appendix is already gone, because I do not have the appropriate scar to go with it.
