I'd say if it means sleeping on a pull-out sofa, it isn't worth it. I've never slept on one that was really comfortable. Leave them for your guests.
A fold up Murphy bed would be a good way to save space and they are fine for sleeping.
You could probably find something a bit cheaper if you look around. Many landlords are reducing rents because the vacancy rate has gone up a bit, you might even be able to knock off fifty bucks from the unit you're in if you chat with someone.

What this city needs is more rooming houses.
There are thousands of people who don't require or can't afford a full apartment and don't want to share with anyone else.
There used to be lots of them, they're now gone or have been converted into other uses. Our restrictive bylaws mean that it's difficult to build new units that would solve the homeless problem for many people.

All Trek asked was if he/she should downsize to a smaller apartment and the majority of you criticized them for not being educated or not having a good job. Who the fuck cares if trek works at Micky D's. What he/she does for a living had nothing to do with the question they asked.
Now to answer your question Trek. I find $850 to be reasonable for a one bedroom apartment. I have a friend who was paying $650 to rent a room in a house (they had free run of the rest of the house) I think that if you can afford to stay in the Apartment then you should. However, if you plan to put the extra money you save away for a big purchase (ie. condo, house) by moving into a bachelor apartment then IMHO that would be the better route.
It all comes down to you, and what your needs are. I havn't really had to struggle myself to make ends meet, but i do have friends who work hard and have very little to show for it after expense are paid.
