I just read about a guy getting blackmailed using his original cell #, the person got a lot of info from their # when looked up. Just wondering if you guys are using a Hobby Phone (which one did you use) or are using a Texting App, which looks like a real # on the other end (I have Android).

How much money is involved if I want to get an actual Hobby Smartphone, with a new number and use if for about 4 days when I'm in town on vacation?

Just wondering if you guys are using one of these or just your normal phone and there's not much to worry about here?

I used many but have stuck with Fongo for calling. It's FREE in the google play store. Don't know about now, but when i first installed it years ago, it gave me choice between 905 or 416 or 647 area codes. I've had 416 for years. Love it!
i use Text+ for texting as well have tinkered with several others which gave me a local number as my own...

I just bought the 7-11 speak out last week.

Got the flip phone (Alcatel) because I wanted one that would have long battery life. So far 10 days with minimal use.

Paid 39.99 for the phone ($20 off with $50 voucher). $50 voucher - last for 1 year before expiry. $1.25 burns off per month. 15 cents text out - in free. 25 cents per minute calling. And $10 for the SIM card.

You can buy them on-line but I went totally stealth - paid cash at the store.

So for $100 bucks (plus tax) I am set.

Oh btw the way - GSM - on Rogers network and the phone is sold UNLOCKED.

Call the location first to check inventory. They never had the flip. They said it flies out of there. Finally lucked out.

^^^This.

I mean, seriously, how cheap do you have to be?

Yes, an app is cheaper/free. And you're still using your phone. You are covered on the one way for people to blackmail you, but that still leaves you wide open to law enforcement, to your phone being discovered, etc.

$100 for a stealth burner. Keep it turned off 99% of the time, use it when you need it, leave it someplace where it won't be found, and you are D. O. N. E. $100 to start, $50 per year after that, and you protect yourself. Anything else is like not wanting to use rubbers because of the COST (not the sensation loss). It's the price of doing business. It's the entry fee into this hobby. Get your head wrapped around that.

Oh, and don't call the 7-11 to see if they have inventory. Just make a habit of dropping by a 7-11 a day, and you'll eventually find what you're looking for. Those stores get enough traffic that nobody is going to look up their surveillance tapes for someone buying a dang phone. You're good. Just be smart and careful.

I think a new number is enough.

What is the likelihood of having your fake number traced back to your phone?

Text app vs Hobby phone

Hobby phone- get a decent one that you can easily text and browse the web in case you need to check out girl to book, to read up on the girls' review.
Put a password on it. It's easy and more reliable than the Text app to use. It's not easily traceable. 7-11 Speakout is the best for this. The problem is they are sort of difficult to hide from your SO. How would you explain that? Honey it's my work phone. If you hide them, that also means that you can't receive call or text msg or email etc... inconvenient
If you are worry about LE, this is the best option. You just destroy and discard the phone. No trace back to you. Dont use home or work WIFI unless you use VPN with it.

Text app and phone call app- (Fongo, Textme) you can get a real phone number with it. They don't always work with everything. Not as reliable as the real phone. Put password lock on the app. Turn off the notification- you don't want incoming text or call to pop up while you left your phone unattended or while standing beside your SO. You can text anytime, it's discrete. If you are worry about LE, they can trace back to your IP for your network and Wifi IP. Unless you use VPN

As for the OP, if he's in town for few days by himself, than it's best to just get a 711 Speakerout, and use it freely. But if he doesn't want to go through that, you can get a throw away text app account just for the visit

I use a hobby phone now. I used to use burner app on my cell but one time i was in an incall and called to confirm i was at the spot, the booker could not hear a word i said and was pretty much shouting into the phone in the middle of the lobby. After that experience i'm happy with the hobby phone, just takes a while to text with it due to the qwerty keyboard i chose to have with it

I have Fongo on my iPod. Only issue to my mind is having to be at a wifi hotspot to use. Always delete call history. I was once calling my lady on my cell and just as I hung up got a call from the SO. Would have been bad if she called a couple minutes earlier and got a busy signal. Would have has some splaining to do.

You might need to get it unlock. Which provider did you use the phone with before? Go to 711 and pay cash for the prepaid Speakout sim card and Prepaid top up card. If you need the phone, they sell BLU smartphone for $49 and buy $100 top-up. They will should last you 1 year.

Is there a good procedure to follow when texting for outcalls? You may have a burner phone, but you'd still have to text your name and full address, thus your anonymity goes out the window - There's your electronic trail right there....

Check out the Hushed app. It creates a disposable phone number for you which you can use for calls and texts. It even has voicemail. You can find it on the app store.

I used Hushed at first before getting a dedicated line when the volume of calls and texts became too high for the app to handle.

I used to have a burner phone, but for a one-time fee of $4.99 to get a number, Fongo or similar can't be beat. Unlimited texts and calls in and out, and it will use your regular cell data plan when you are away from wifi. I haven't had any issues communicating with it - in fact fewer issues than with my crappy burner.
Same here, I use to use a burner phone, it's just more troublesome to carry another phone, and having to hide it. Now I use text app. The one down side to text app is that some ladies don't like them.

Unless I'm missing something, Fongo doesn't give the receiver any indication that you are texting them from an app.
If the SP is using the same service it's easy to tell.

Or there are tools you can use to check which carrier the number belong to.

I have an option on my Samsung Galaxy SIII that turns off my caller ID.....I tried it one day, and called a friend without turning caller ID back on....my number showed up as private.

I don't know if it works for text.

It would make no sense with text. The recipient would not be able to reply.
